Hi All

I recently purchased Civ 5 and have certainly noticed (as has been mentioned before) the AI is much more aggressive than in 4.

Basically, the AI keeps attacking me and declaring War on me and often I can have multiple AI players declaring war on me at the same time! I have played Civ 3 and 4 and never experienced this level of hostility.

Can someone well experienced and knowledge please assist me as follows:

I have been playing at the Prince level of difficulty.

1) Why is the AI so aggressive? More importantly, what are the triggers for it to go to war and attack? Why may it be happening so often?
2) What is the strategy for dealing with this? Obviously war is unavoidable (as it is in the real world) but anyway to reduce the constant barrage I seem to keep copping?

If anyone can give me a better understanding/graps of this that would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Ok. I've spent a lot of time messing about with it but these are some things I did to make "friends"

1) Denouncements. Pay attention to these. Decide who you want to be a friend and actively denounce who they denounce. Don't wait to do it, do it was soon as you see it.

2)When they ask for something, don't be afraid to give it.

3)Look for overlaps in denouncements/friendships. So say Germany and Rome (who are declared friends) denounce Russia and you want them as allies. Denounce Russia. But more importantly you might befriend both as well. What will happen over time is that they will regard you positively.

4)Keep in mind how you treat city states and which are allies of whom.

5) Trade, Trade, Trade. Trade for luxuries and whatnot. I find that Civs that I allied with which I traded at every opportunity with were always more likely to be long term allies.

6) Rinse and repeat. So they denounced Russia again? Ok, the you do it again too. You're allies you need to stick together! Keep up constant support is important always be engaged in the affairs of your allies.

I have done all these things.. my biggest alliance was myself and three civs who never threatened or declared war on me. My worst case scenario was I had one ally... on another continent... It can be done.

The triggers are the same things that would worry a player:
Expansion
Moving forces to a border
Warmongering
Competition for almost any resource
and being isolationist.

Going it alone and not interacting with the other Civs, I find, just leads them to hate you. Being anti-social in game isn't a good thing. I know it all sounds fluffy but give it a go. You might be surprised.

The AI display's aggressiveness vs perceived weakness. The surest way to prevent them from declaring war on you is to have a strong military. Most times when they DoW they'll tell you that you asked for it because of your weak military.

also if you have a weak army, decline every open borders treaty, don't want them looking and seeing how weak you are
