Okay, here's what happened:

Playing as the Greek, I found myself falling behind in tech around 700 AD. Everyone else was going for useful techs (gunpowder, astronomy, printing press), while I was trying to get ... music theory (yes, I'm a sucker for Bach's cathedral). I finally get it, and build the cathedral in my capital with a leader I saved for that.

Then, I enter diplomatic negotiations with the remaining AI opponents.

And in a single turn, I got astronomy, gunpowder, printing press, several world maps and a chunk of cash from the AI nations - all in trade for music theory - which was completely USELESS as I had already built the cathedral and everyone knew about it. MWAHAHAHA are these guys DUMB ! ;)

Gotta love it.

I had the French send a gaggle of workers and settlers ... at least 8 ... right into my territory on the way to some open spot on the far side of my territory. No guards, no right to pass agreement, just wandered on in between two fortresses and into the heart of my territory. Well, I did what any self-respecting German Despot would, I captured them all and put em to work in the mines! The French declared war at me, but never even got around to attacking since there were two or three civs in between us (that had apparently let the Frenchies wander through!) ... and the 10 new no-cost workers boosted my production massively.

The one I like to use alot is the 'Robin Hood Blitzkreig' ...
If youre at war in a farway territory and taking over cities is kind of pointless due to distance and corruption, try this: Take the city, move all your guys off of it right away and THAT ROUND sell it to the highest bidder. The AI civs will pay ANYTHING for a city, even one off in the boonies. Conquer the city next door, sell it to a DIFFERNET civ for everything thye've got! Repeat until they don't offer you anything worthwhile... wait 20 rounds before doing it again (when the previous agreements expire)
You end up with a patchwork of weak cities held by different countries... and they're all paying you out the nose!

This also works well if your defensive position is hopeless: if you're about to lose an outlying city no matter what you can do, withdraw and SELL IT. Sell it to an ally, sell it to a weaker enemy so you can retake it later... the AI will give you an arm and a leg for it, and the approaching army won't attack it, giving you a chance to fall back to a better position.

I <3 the AI :goodjob:

The AIs seem to really like music theory, I noticed that in my game too....

One thing I did in my recent game was when I sent a small invasion army to Russia, but lost all but one unit, I used the other to go capturing workers and sending them back home. I really like workers, I have a multicultural workforce. :D
