I've got about 300 hours in vanilla Civ 5, then i downloaded G&K.

Thought i had Diplomacy nicely figured out. Second game in, I spawn with Dido and Boudicca for neighbors.

I was going to describe how i felt about these two after a few turns, but this isn't an MTV gansta rap video from the 1990s, so i'll just leave it.

"I am the mighty Dido, we seek peace and prosperity.." Yada yada

"These are dangerous times, shall we make a public declaration of friendship.."

"I've come to scrounge for free stuff"

"That deal where you gave me surplus gold/resources for nothing helped greatly strengthen our relationship, shall we renew it"

"HaHaHa! It is time to reveal my cunning plan! Die, Die, Die ignorant fool!"

"For the good of our two nations , let's make peace"

"These are dangerous times, shall we make a public declaration of friendship.."

.... Repeat ad nauseam.

I had both of them at this all through the middle ages, till Napoleon finally wiped the stupid Welsh #';#';! out for me (maybe if you'd built some improvements/buildings rather than just attacking me every 5 seconds, you'd still be here.) then i researched Cannon, and decided to take 3 of Dido's cities off her on her next DoW.

She had such a face on when i finally offer peace, but two turns later her "friendly" mask is on again.

Anyway, I accepted all of these declarations of friendship, and coughed up on every demand for tribute, hoping that the repeated declarations of war on me, while a DoF was still active, would get them into serious trouble. Yet, nary a condemnation was to be heard from their neighbours, even though both Dido and Boudicca were surrounded by significantly larger powers.

In contrast, I had a game in Vanilla Civ 5, where China was friends with both myself and Rome. I entered a Defensive Pact with China, a few turns later, Rome attacks me, forcing China to DoW Rome even though they had an active DoF. "BACKSTABBED ROME" appears in big red letters on China's diplomacy screen and within a few turns every Civ on the planet condemns China. This turned into a me & China vs the world scenario, which i eventually lost.

Yet Dido and Boudicca are able to get away with this repeatedly.

On a related note, I hope the baseline Civs haven't changed too much. I hear in the guides that China is supposed to be backstab happy, which wasn't my experience in the vanilla game - at least on current patch. She's damn hard to get a DoF with and can be reckless, but once you do you're set for life really - she doesn't suddenly turn on you because you're drawing close to victory or because her military is now twice the size of yours - thanks to all the captured cities you traded her.

Wu Zetian can appear "friendly" when you're talking to her, but that's just politeness. She may later attack you if the odds seem to be in her favour, but that's because she was never actually friends with you in the first place. In contrast i've had Catherine the Great throws out DoF at the drop of a hat, but it's no guarantee she won't attack you the next turn. Caesar and Bismark at least, can act in a similar way.
