AI with nukes! Reality or a trick to scare you?

Hi,
I was playing a massive, future era, huge, 4 continents, 16 or 18 civs (whatever the game maximum is), deity and I developed enough to be the no. 1 power on my continent. I played with the Arabs and I got a bit scared when the Egyptians and Persians expanded their borders right next to mine, so I made two nukes for protection. Then my cities had nothin' to do and I made another couple. I repeated this and ended with Mecca building nukes constantly. Now I have like 40 nukes in Mecca (and 53 defense units garrisoned) and 10 in Medina. I realised that I had enough nukes to destroy the entire continent so I quit producing nukes in other cities (Mecca still builds them). Then it came to my tiny brain that even if I use a single nuke, the deity-class AI probably has and will use more nukes than I do. Then I sent my spies to check the AI. All I found was regular defensive units and NO nukes. I also used the worldbuilder to check every city in my current game and nobody had nukes except me. I found six civs with uranium, the Americans, Mali, England, Germany, Japan and me. This is my first game on deity in civ4 and I was a bit scared when I started, but now I see that AI is a lot weaker than I thought.

So I ask you, does AI build nukes? I heard that they ussually nuke you when you nuke them, but I never got into a nuke fight with the AI so do they build nukes after you nuke them or also in times of peace???

This is actually a pretty good observation. I prefer to start wars early and end them as early as possible, so I normally don't get to use nukes, so I'm not really sure. They probably build them once in a while, I would think.

I got nuked by India one time. Perhaps because I nuked them first?

Then the UN decided no more nukes. WTH~!

I keep trying to get it to happen again, but to no avail. What is a harbinger of death to do? :nuke:

until i read the post immediately above me i would have said the AI using the nukes is myth. Just remember if you use them global warming will become a real problem real quick (which is bs, NUCLEAR WINTER is caused by nukes not global warming)

This was discussed about 1 month ago. AI never EVER builds nukes. If you give them with WB they use it, but they DO NOT build them in any case.

Unless there is a Harry S. Truman in Warlords it would be true to life. People don't like using nukes.

The AI needs to create more of a threat with nukes.

Then. both Civs are deterred by Mutual destruction. That would make the nukes more fun. Cold war all over again.

I was never at war when nukes were availabel, though, so I really don't know about AI, but I guess they do.

Heh, that's cute. Two :)

I've never been nuked by the AI, but I have seen nukes in AI cities. Not for a long time though. Maybe not since the release (i.e. no patch) come to think of it...

lol, I know two nukes cant stop a deity AI, but I thought of using them on their biggest cities if I get involved in a war with them. Btw I now have :nuke: 85:nuke: nukes and the AI is still at 0 (Mecca now gets one nuke per turn  )
I suppose AI only builds nukes in the plain version, as for the patch they get nukes after you nuke them.:D

Even though AIs don't build nukes, I think they turn down the non-proliferation treaty if a player has loads of nukes. I stockpiled like 70 nukes and then tried passing the resolution but they all refused. When I got rid of them all they all voted yes. All despite the fact that they'll never build them anyway...

The AI does not use nukes ?! That seems like a major issue. I would think at least a few civs would have them. It would be great if they could bluff you with them - saying they have them and don't or vice versa. That would be interesting.

I am really only a casual Civ player and I have no idea if that would be even be possible to program. Regardless - no AI nukes?!

In the games I play, I use nukes in the late game to take away the late game boredom.

One trick I developped is to build tons of nukes before the UN comes in then I try to get the non-proliferation act passed so Im the only one with nukes.

In a game I played the others AI civs were as good as me in the tech and culture and I waged war with Mensa musa and he never tried to nuke me even if I nuked the hell out of him! I think he had 2 or 3 nukes waiting to blow me up !

Currently playing a modern start at Noble. I ignored Nukes & Manhattan project until Bismarck builf the Manhattan project. Thought I better build the SDI then, and I finished it and every other civ in the game also finished the SDI within a few turns of me doing it. I built a few nukes just so I had them - I don't like using them agaiinst SDI - seems a waste of time - it works much better than the 75% advertised.

Anyhow, along the way a bit later, I declared war on Tokugawa (Japan) and moved into his area and started blasting away with Modern Armor and Mech Inf at the nearest city. First turn that Tokugawa has after the war declaration, he lets got four nukes at me!!

It's not a myth.

Well - it seems that those four were the only four he had, and none of them landed (good old SDI at 100% again) but Tokugawa DID have them and he DID use them.

well my modding knownledge is rather useless, but would it be possible to create a script that would encourage ai to build nukes more often? Someone said if they are given them they will use them

but yea It would be awesome to have one ai country make threats or blackmail another country with its huge nuclear arsenal..

It would be just like the USA modern day, and how they dont like other countries becoming powerful... like iran

Ouch!

True, but ouch!

Nukes really don't seem powerful enough to me, i've seen them leave no radioactive fallout whatsoever. I've also seen the fallout disappear after a few turns when noone had enviromentalism

Considering the AI does'nt use them I guess the human player has an advantage...maybe that's why they did'nt make them too powerfull,I suppose.

I'm sure there is a file somewhere to change the way AI builds Nukes....I know you can change their destructive power....

When I first started playing 4 months ago I remember a game where there were alot of Nukes flying around...can't remeber if it was a mod or vanilla though. Have'nt seen much since, very rare occasion!

All that matters is whether or not their word is backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

I remember back with CIV I, when I honestly got the diplo screen from the Zulus..with the message:-

"We demand that you give us the secret of writing, our word is backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!"

In 1700Bc, lying little b*****ds :)
