Airplanes and Submarines?

I love aviation and u-boats. I spend so much time studying subs during WWII, and I am super excited to see how they will be reworked in Civ VI.

Since I have only been able to play Civ V's version of airplanes, i find that it can be a bit boring since you can't actually "see" them when they're parked in your city. I'm hoping that with the new sequel they will play a larger role in our games =]

I did like how in Civ4 you could see your fighters circling while assigned air defense missions.

I also liked how you could send submarines, in 3 or 4, into opponent's territory without declaring war. But matching the mechanics of that with diplomacy is not easy.

Was it in Civ IV that subs could go under the ice to hide from surface ships? I remember building them in tundra cities that otherwise had no access to the southern oceans. If this wasn't in Civ V (never built too many subs so I can't remember), then it definitely should be possible in VI.

We've already been told that bombers can destroy (or 'pillage' I guess) improvements and districts; so 'strategic bombing' where you put someone in the Stone Age without ever setting boots on the ground will be possible even before nukes.:D Should be quite fun (assuming you're not on the receiving end...).

Subs could go under ice tiles in civ 5, but they couldn't attack from there.

Hopefully they will bring that back in Civ VI; it was both pleasing visually and extremely informative; you could tell at a glance where the fighter coverage was.

I have no idea why they removed it in Civ V.

Yeah, there was also some satisfaction to seeing your air cover at a glance.

Airports are districts now, iirc. I'd be surprised if you couldn't see whether or not there were planes at the airfields.

I want zeppelins.

Zeppelins? Yes, please! :D

There was a zeppelin game I loved playing, back in the day. Zeppelin: Giants of the Sky, I believe it was called.

I'm hoping zeppelins do not make a reappearance. They were never a viable combat unit. They were used by just one country for just a few years and were useful for only one thing: the nighttime terror bombing of cities. They were the WWI version of the V-1.

Scouts aren't viable combat units either.

Scouts are useful as scouts. Airships aren't even useful for that. They're just too vulnerable to changes in the weather.

Let's bear in mind one of the policies confers a bonus to "Recon" units. Suggests perhaps an upgrade path into Explorers & Drones & the like.

There's no weather in Civ? ;)

Anyway, a long range airship that can explore land and sea, and not be attacked by most units could have it's uses.

It's not a deal breaker either way.

I certainly hope the bombers and/or fighters will be able to perform recon missions - preferably even automated each turn. The game Empire from decades ago allowed that.

The use of airships as scouts proved useful as far back as the American Civil War. You didn't necessarily need to move anywhere. Just being in the sky behind your own lines gave you a good tactical view of your enemy's defenses because of the elevation.

Furthermore, while their tactical use soon gave way to fixed wing aircraft, multiple militaries used them as bombers in the Great War; at the very least, Italy, France, and (of course) Germany. Italy was using them as bombers as far back as 1912.

I would like to see them come back as the first air unit, with limited combat ability, but primarily useful for the increased range-of-view air units give in Civ V.

I'd like to see hot air balloons as the first air units. They would pop up in the industrial era. They wouldn't have any combat strength and would have limited range. They could subsequently be upgraded to zeppelins in the next era and would have some combat ability and much further range. Perhaps be upgraded to something else later on.

Depends how long and how many eras there are, though. If there is an era between the industrial era and the modern era then I think that it would work.

Not essential, of course, but I think it would be neat. :)

Yeah, for that to work out you'd need a WWI "machine age" between the industrial era and modern era. Otherwise you end up with early hot air balloons alongside biplane fighters, and zeppelins when you should be getting your first B-17s and Lancasters.
