airships

I've found the AI to be fond of spamming Airships and then not using them. Once there were 11 of the things in cities along the border I was attacking, and not once were my forces attacked by them although I had no air defence.
I approve of this, in that it wastes the AI's production, but it's better when it spams triremes when I get a privateer into place because of all the XPs I gain by sinking them !
 
I just changed Airships to require Combustion + Physics... that stops them from flying around in the early Renaissance, and puts them back in the late Industrial Age where they belong (and right before the advent of fighters). If the AI wants to build them at that point, fine by me... he won't be bombing folks with airships for 400 years before aircraft are invented anymore.

No, it makes them REALISTIC, and they still serve a purpose, the window is just not 400 years of use anymore.

By your logic, we might as well add pink and purple polka-dot dragons with marshmallow unicorns because you want things in the game that make no sense at all and fly in the face of reality.

I find plenty of use for Airships with REALISTIC settings... why are you so fearful of having Airships with a realistic set of tech requirements? They still have plenty of use, you just can't build them several hundred years equivalent ahead of flight. Why does reality bother you?
 
It's a game. I want gameplay and balance, and I want units that stick around long enough to use them. Realism is useless if it takes the fun out of the game.

Once you start going down the realism rathole, you may as well scrap the whole game because very little of it is realistic. Why can a tank only move twice as fast as a guy carrying around a spear? Why does it take destroyers years to move around the world? Why do no units die when hit by a single nuke, but all units die when hit by 2 nukes? Why are marines bigger than the tallest buildings in my city?

besides if you ask me airships are the coolest thing ever made, so majestic something hundreds of feet long just floating across the sky. People who travelked across the antlantic on the hindenburg claimedthat it was the most majestic form of travel ever.

The future has a place for zepeelins for now we have the technology to use them and weed out all the problems the ones from 80 years ago had, and plus you could make them completely green, i have several designs that allow for completely green air travel with zeppelins that leaves absolutely zero carbon behind.

About the game zeppelin though, i'd rather see it be turned in to a transport unit that can carry one or two units at a time and be able to move around freely like any ship, only it would have to return to a city every 10 turns or so often to refuel. Also it would not be able to attack, just defend, like an explorer or a scout unit.

Imagine a whole world completely connected by zeppelins, carrying missionaries, corporation people, great people, and possibly even entire armies.

It would be nice if someone could design a unit like that for people to download to their games.
 
cant someone then please add Led Zeppelins to the British UU, they could attack with groovy basslines, wicked drumsequences and shrieking guitarsolos:D

I imagine it could be modded , by using lines of code from both the caravel and the airship. I see you already are on your way to getting what you want in the unit requests thread. Congratulations!
 
Airships can be useful with sufficient support from land units. If they are useful in AI hand it means that your stack is not large enough. Airships make strong armies stronger and weak armies even weaker.

Well, you can get flight fairly soon if you skip rifling and corporation lines and already have steel :). I think on water-heavy maps flight path may be better, than assembly line.
