AI's like Liberty too much

if i understand flavors correctly, over half tend to choose liberty. i'll list the AIs in their preference for opening with liberty. note that flavors change on a game by game basis so this doesn't always apply:

catherine

augustus
napolean

kamahameha

alex
isabella
montezuma

suleiman
washington

elizabeth

genghis

bismarck (honor second choice)

oda and pacachuti are 50/50, both split with honor

hiawatha and ram both barely tend to choose tradition

harun slightly more inclined to tradition, harald honor

darius tradition

then there are those who will very rarely choose liberty:

i think gandhi will always choose tradition,

wu tends tradition,

ramesses tradition,

neb tradition / askia honor

I find it highly amusing that half of those personalities mentioned would choose Liberty, yet whenever I see George "I trust you are a friend to liberty" Washington, he would be going all over Honor and Tradition.

Yes, YOU are the friend to liberty, not him!

I don't blame the AI for liking liberty, If you had no happiness constraints and could spam cities at will I'd imagine you might pick the same.

Nah, I prefer going small until I get three things: uranium, nuclear missiles and Fascism/Militarism. Spamming cities is kinda detrimental to that.

From most of the high level strategy posts/discussions, I'm pretty sure most Immortal/Deity players also prefer to go Liberty first and finish it as fast as possible. It plays into their PT/ND great engineer rush strategy. In fact, there's a thread discussion that just tapered off within the last two days that addressed this fact of choosing Liberty and finishing it as fast as possible vs. going Honor or Tradition opener first.

I tried utilizing this method in my last standard size map game as Washington and was able to leverage my 5 city empire into a 25 city empire (20 puppets). Although I do prefer to go with early tradition and really get the most out of my first 3 - 4 cities before warmongering (like smallfish said), Liberty's free settler (nothing to scoff at even if you only plan on having 2 or 3 cities total), trade route happiness (if you plan on warring/puppeting), free worker, and free great person for completing the tree can all play nicely into any strategy including thin/tall.

I'm going liberty first in easily 90% of my games. Basically I'm doing this to counter the AI's habit of intentionally settling toward me.

Until they make the AI start picking the actual best settling site, I'll probably keep going liberty first (unless it's OCC).

Liberty is good for a wide or tall empire, really. Representation and Meritocracy are obviously best for a wide empire, but the free settler and free worker are very powerful, and the free GP is good for whatever strategy you want to pursue.
