AK3 Cleo Emperor

If the shoe fits....

@ all - put on kevlar, go to basement, i have an 'idea'. Yes snow is falling in September, hell hath frozen over, etc... Let's bite the bullet, pay the extornist prices for alpha and WC. Then research writing and get Russia and Spain in a war with each other and get the boats out. Thoughts?

Sounds like a plan....start with alphabet, then accumulate enough gold to buy WC, build archers and apply the Adm's sharpened cue stick to somebody's eye. Meanwhile get the boats in the water ( do we have a coastal city yet?, do we have a barracks city yet?), keep Wally/Norm and his buddies trolling for pick-ups.....adn go on from there.

I would still like to make at least one more contact before we start trading with the neighbors though.

En passant, what barb setting did you use on this one

I'm sorry, my CD is acting up, I can't play for a little while. Skip/Switch me, please.

In some good news, neither Spain nor Russia has Writing yet, so we're not too far beind at all.

In more good news, there are horses northeast of Memphis. We'll want to claim those soon.

Summary

We should be able to settle a few cities in the next set of turns. Our tech situation isn't too bad now, as Russia and Spain are only up three visible techs on us. I know the tech dealing was a bit different then discussed, but I worked with what we had. We could try some minimum research on Writing now, but we're a little low on cash due to gpt we're paying out. After settling Bede's spot, I would advocate securing the horses, and then settling west in the fertile land we have there.

Got it! Will try to grab horses and settle 2-game hill.

Kaiser,

:goodjob: on the dealing.

Looks like we need the coastal city to get the Adm some bath tub toys.

Ok, I couldn't do too much damage to this game yet, but I tried. Let's see...

1.2150: We're at 0% sci, so I upped that to 10%, so we can at least take advantage of the min sci break designed for yokels like us. I also do some MM in Memphis. It was going to finish the granary and grow in pop at the same time. So now we'll get a granary in 4 and pop a little bit later.

IT: Spain kicks our warrior out. I am insulted, and immediately declare war (jk).

2.2110: Hmm, Thebes is working some really nice tiles, but it's going to waste 6 out of 7 shields building a settler. This hurts me. I switch to barracks, with a settler to follow. This will only waste a couple of shields. We'll need some militry units soon, anyway.

IT: Spanish settler/warr going South toward (our) floodplains.

3.2070 ...

IT: Spanish build city on their floodplain, we're OK for now. But not for long. There are 3 wheats, 2 BG's, and the flood plain itself. This is an expansionist's dream!

4.2030 ...

5.1990: Thebes rax->settler, Memphis granary->settler.

6.1950 ...

IT: Russians establish embassy. They're growing nicely, Moscow is currently size 1, so they just sent a settler somewhere.

7.1910 ...

8.1870 ...

9.1830: Thebes settler->warrior. The new settler is going towards the horses. If we set up camp in the desert next to the horses, we can eventually work the wheat on the flood plain on the other side of the mountain. There's a Spanish city pretty close by, but not close enough to work the horses.

10.1790: Thebes is finishing a warrior in 1, alternating settler/warrior in the queue. Memphis is bulding settler in 2. It is growing quickly, and happiness is an issue. So it can easily crank out workers->settler->woker->..., keeping the population in check. We're at 30% lux right now, most of it due to Memphis. I'm thinking the first settler out of Memphis should claim the 3 wheat to the NW. Even thought it means settling on a floodplain. We can afford to lose a pop here and there if we're working those kinds of tiles! Anyway, like it or not, we can't let it fall into Spain's hands. They would use it to devour the whole continent. So, I believe claiming that land is a priority. We can settle Bede's Hill in a little while.

Got it.

This is a very dry world, look at all the desert/floodplain/plains!

Grasshoppa ha' questions/ideas before viper gets going.

1. What happens when the barbs get hungry and eat the settler heading towards the horses?

2. How are we going to turn plowshares into swords if we plop all our early settlers on floodplains?

3. Grassland to south and west which would provide good base for a fleet anchorage. We gonna end up like Gilligan if we don't get off this island soon (here for a long long time, have to make the best of it...)

A very kindly Doc recently and very correctly pointed out the errors of unfocused SGs. Since this is a nice relaxed no variant game, would like all to post their three highest priorities.

Mine are:
1. Horses (Bede and chariots are simply something one must experience once in a lifetime; it will be even better if we have silks and grapes by then)
2. Game City for another rax.
3. Boats (i.e. coastal city) so we don't hae to deal with the monopolies up north.

let's see if we can reach a consensus before we proceed. :)

Bede's top three:

1) Game City is critical. With all that venison we will have a food and shield powerhouse.

2) Boats....the Admiral needs bath tub toys.

3) Horses are nice.

I was hoping three things:
a) Odds are they won't appear before we get there and build a city.
b) The Spanish city is close, and if they see barbs odds are they will go out and kill them for us. They are a mutual enemy.
c) Lastly, if it gets really bad, the barbs will steal 1G from our vast treasury of 11G. Or if the Horse City is pop 2 by then and we haven't sent a warrior over tere, it can whip a warrior for it own defense.

Hmm, that looks more like 4 things. But anyway, the MP in Memphis is too important, without him our lux needs to go up 10% or 20%.

If we don't have enough shield-producing cities by the time we need them, we can always whip food-rich cities. What really scares me is when an AI grabs a food-rich territory and keeps whipping it at times of war. If there's going to be whipping going on, I'd prefer if the units that are produced wear Egyptian uniforms.

Yeah, except noone is going to settle there for a while. Both the Russians and the Spanish have good land closer to them. We can send the next settler out of Thebes over there. But the horses and the wheat will be contested very soon. They are in no-man's land, and they look too delicious to pass up for long.

1) Horses.
2) 3 wheat, 2 bonus grass, flood plain to the NW.
3) Coastal city somewhere to the SW.

1. Game City. Danz's spot is a great one too, I guess it gets 1 1/2.
2. Horses. I think we should relive Bede's Chariot Ride on our War Chariots.
3. Boats. The admiral isn't an Admiral without a navy :) .

So far it looks like we all agree that Game city/wheat floodplains are high priority. One question for those of you that voted #1 on Horses: any reason besides Bede's Ride? I don't see too big of a rush to get them since we don't want a Golden Age in Despotism.
