All about the Inuit.

Well, it's not really going to be finished until we've tested it and balanced it and made it as good as it can be, but I'll upload some playable versions with placeholder art for testing and such probably rather soon.

Can you add a Seal resource as well? If you can manage it, have them appear on both snow and tundra tiles, and next to water tiles. Seals have always been an important resource for the Inuit and to their trade with other tribes and with Europeans.

Adding in a Seal resource would be interesting. I looked at some of the suggestions for Seals in this thread, and here are my thoughts. We can't add in a Seal resource that is on terrain, lest other civs work it . We'd have to limit it so that only the Inuit could work it. But at that point, that's basically a whole new UA. I think we'd be seriously overpowering the Inuit if we did this in conjunction with the UA we have now.

I think we should overhaul it. I think we should have an Inuit UA such that for every city the Inuit have in snow tiles, the Inuit get one seal resource. You know how mercantile CSs spawn with a unique resource? I think we should have something like that, but for cities in the Inuit build in snow. That way, we have a unique playstyle without giving the inuit a UA that basically turns tundra tiles into plains tiles, which is what we have now. This would give people incentive to conquer Inuit Snow cities, as it would give the opposing player the Seal resource, so I think we should put combat bonus (of some kind) in snow tiles (kind of like what we have now). Seals would be a luxury resource that gives extra food.

As an alternative you could add an improvement (Let's call it 'Hunting Grounds') available only on tundra tiles without forest that gives some coin, food and production. Like the Terrace Farms for the Inca or Polder for Netherlands.

Seals should be available to all. It does not make sense to restrict it to only the Inuit. Seals will only start on snow and tundra tiles along the coast, so they will not be easily available unless you start around that terrain as the Inuit will.

I dunno. I think it would make gameplay for the inuit a lot more fun if only they could have Seals. It would give the Inuit a unique resource available only from cities in the arctic that they could trade with other civilizations, which is a nice parallel to history.

I'm going to make a Seal-less mod with the UA from before and then I'll try making another mod with Seals only for the inuit just to see what happens. I'm basically done the Seal-less mod, with the exception of art files and two problems with the Qamutiq (it has mountainwalk and no combat animations play). I can post it up if you want to play with it, because you can still play with it just to test out mechanics.

Here's a preliminary version of the mod.

Things to do:

1) Art needs work. Leader icons need "glow". Need higher quality map image. Need DoM image with Map (as opposed to current image). Civ icon needs to have colors swapped (i.e. blue inuksuk, yellow background). Colors may change depending on how inuit culture colors change. Need icons for Qamutiq and Inuksuk
1a) Have yet to add code for dealing with when this civ is being played by an AI. (Leader screens, unique responses, etc.)

2) Qamutiq currently has mountain walk and does not play combat animations. This is a result of icewalk. Note that Qamutiq cannot embark due to icewalk: this problem is likely here to stay, barring help from a lua messiah. Mountainwalk is a result of <CanMoveAllTerrain> and the fact that "MOUNTAIN_TERRAIN" has nothing to do with mechanics. Mountainwalk may be able to be overridden by lua. Lack of combat animations due to the creation of a new combatclass. I think I have an idea for fixing this, however.
2a) New Skin for the Qamutiq.

3) I personally think that the UA should be different, because for the time being the UA is pretty lackluster. This is a problem independent from 1) and 2), so we can put this to the side for now.

That's bizarre. The link seems to work for me. I'll try to fix it.

I've also been working on this mod since then. I can post up that version too. I was gonna hold on to it until I found some kind of fix for the lack of combat animations for the qamutiq, but I can post it up now.

Since Greenland will most likely become a fully independant nation within the foreseeable future then why not just use their current flag, colors and coat of arms for the Inuit civ?

There is a lot more to the Inuit than Greenland alone.
Indeed, but that wasn't really my point.

EDIT: Just realized that you have been using the flag, colors and coat of arms of Nunavut (the Canadian Inuits) which is fine I suppose, but it does seem a little biased since 1/3-2/5 of the entire Inuit population are living in Greenland. Perhaps a compromise combining parts from both would be better to represent the Inuit as a combined people?

I've re-uploaded the original version of the mod. What exactly are you having trouble with Polar Bear? Are the files corrupted? Is it extracting properly?

Anyway, if that doesn't work, I've put it up on RapidShare. I don't know a whole lot about file sharing on the internet. If anyone knows a better resource for this, please let me know.

The New Version: https://rapidshare.com/files/1282833283/Inuit Civilization (v 2).rar

The Old Version: https://rapidshare.com/files/2060774469/Inuit Civilization (v 1).rar

What is different in the new version:

Totally different UA. The UA is now: Coastal cities built on or next to snow receive Seals, a unique luxury resource. +25% combat strength in Snow and Tundra. The UB (Inuksuk) has a bit of a tweak, and now gives and extra +1 Food on Deer and Whales.

Some new artwork. Lots of the artwork is still terrible, but it is a step up from the old art.

Added leader responses for when the AI plays as the Inuit. The AI flavors still need tweaking. Also, when you talk to Apanuugpak, Dido's video plays.

Qamutiq (UU) still does not display combat animations and it still has mountainwalk. This is because of Ice Walk.

For the time being, this mod only works with G&K. Compatibility with vanilla will be worked on after mechanics are worked out.

I'm going to post v.2 in the "New Civilizations" sub-forum, just to get the word out there.

My choice of colours I have on the first page. Dark brown inuksuk (Stone landmark) with ice blue or cream background. This would go with Inuit from Greenland and Canada.

The artwork at this point is totally preliminary and subject to change at any time. I am pretty terrible at making artwork, so I just nabbed art from wherever I could find and put it in as a semi-placeholder. Seriously, if anyone has better art I'd be very very happy to put it in.

I have tried all of the links. I click on the link provided, then I click on the download once it has finished loading, but I cannot do anything with the files I get. Rapidshare did not help.

Sorry to ask such an obvious question, but did you extract the files into a folder and then move that folder into the MODS folder in your Civ 5 directory? If you do that, it should show up in the mods screen.

If you did do that and it still doesn't work, then I can't imagine what the problem is.

I tried extracting them, but I did not know to put them into a mods folder. I am new to this.
