All-Nighter

If you've been playing for that long and playing well, then yes, it should -- because you'll likely have significantly more territory, cities, units and diplomatic relations to manage than you did when you started.

But if you're anything like me after an all-nighter, your brain will also be significantly less capable of complex thinking...

I can't do all-nighters anymore, myself. Wish I could, not much time for C3C these days, especially as I just moved cross-country.

Sleep is for the weak! I guess most people get weaker as they get older.

Should I keep up the caffeine intake so I can keep playing, or stop so I can sleep sooner?
Has any civ'er not experienced this? The "just one more turn" phenomena with civ is strong with the force. Use the force, Luke, just one more turn.

When turns take 30 + minutes to play, easier to go to bed than if they are just another 5 minutes and some objective is in reach.....

Well, the sane thing to do is to go to bed and avoid the late caffeine intake. Humans do need sleep. We are all going to die eventually, but the lack of (good) sleep can expedite the process significantly.

Spoil-sport. Using good sense and reason, hmph.

Edit (again for clarification):
Btw, do you know the equation for awake hours when sleeping less vs living longer?

It may not be that easy. But the gist of it is probable that any time "gained" by (self imposed) sleep deprivation will need to be paid back with significant interest. You will loose both quality and quantity of life. There is a reason why sleep exists in most animals despite the apparent disadvantages. A healthy sleep routine will benefit your ability to play Civ3.

According to the latest research, lack of sleep may cause more harm than previously thought and may lead to the permanent loss of brain cells.

Among the possible physical consequences of sleep deprivation, deficits in attention and working memory are perhaps the most important; such lapses in mundane routines can lead to unfortunate results, from forgetting ingredients while cooking to missing a sentence while taking notes. Performing tasks that require attention appears to be correlated with the number of hours of sleep received each night, declining as a function of hours of sleep deprivation. Working memory is tested by methods such as choice-reaction time tasks.

Attentional lapses also extend into more critical domains in which the consequences can be life or death; car crashes and industrial disasters can result from inattentiveness attributable to sleep deprivation.

That was mostly meant with humor, but I appreciate your interest in sleep.

My theory for the need of sleep revolves around the working brain leaving a lot of 'junk bits' in its network (such as between synapses and receptors). During sleep, the brain plays janitor to clean these bits as well as allow greater physical restoration in general. The big weakness in my theory: it doesn't account for the different stages of sleep very well, esp. dreaming.

IDK, is this now officially off-topic? :)
