Is it true that eliminating someone you have a military alliance against causes a rep hit?

I had an alliance with the egyptions against the indians. The egyptians were "gracious" (or it was polite..) to me until i captured the last remaining indian city. They then immediately went to annoyed...

What gives?

Isn't the goal of a military alliance the destruction of your foe?

It's not so much that you elimiated someone, it's that the other AI know about it. They think you'll do the same to them, or they wanted to be the ones to land the killing blow.

So if you're Persia, and France is the only other civ on your continent, you can take them out and suffer no rep hit so long as they don't have contact with any other civs. But if they make contact, the other AIs will know about your taking them out. Of course, if you can take them out before they tell any other civ, you're still okay.

Also, you get a rep bonus when you have an alliance with another civ, and a bonus for being at war with a common opponent. Both of those bonuses have dropped off now that the war is over. So, it didn't drop all that way just because you destroyed the other civ, more likely it only dropped a little from what it would have been without the bonuses.

I think bigchief has right. Once I was testing it and I had big forces in front of the last English city with 1 rifleman with 1 hp. I saved the game and each try I made alliance with someone else. Before and after I finished the English, I checked the attitudes. It was always increasing to polite (or gracious if it was polite) when signing the alliance, but immediately dropped BACK TO THE SAME LEVEL as it was before as I took out the rifleman thus having our alliance finished.

"Gracious," "polite," "annoyed." These are indications of AI attitude and have nothing to do with your reputation.
Entering an alliance makes the AI's attitude toward you a little better. So, when you end the alliance - by letting it go after 20 turns or by eliminating the enemy civ - the attitude of the AI you were allied with will drop back to what it was before the alliance.

As far as your reputation is concerned, I don't know for sure if eliminating the civ is considered breaking the MA or not, but sealman may be right.

Yes you are correct. I was meaning attitude rather that rep in my post. I will have to remind myself not to make posts while still on my first cup of coffee in the morning.

Never a good idea! Almost as bad as posting after the 5th beer. ;)

Sometimes I got the same problem. In my last game, emperor, ptw 1.27f, I paid alliance to US, I gave them 2 luxes for fighting against Persia. B4r the alliance, I'm sure he was polite (otherwise, I would make alliance again him rather than persia, my style though). But china elimated Persia (I was Germany). The next turn, US declared war on me? Maybe luxs have an effect in this alliance?
@tofe99 : do u test using a luxuries?

Binyo66: No, I didn't include any luxes in the testing, because as you know they are a bit scarce in the game, and in that moment I had no spare luxes to trade...
