Hi im a newbie to Civ 3 and i am just playing my first game. I am getting on ok but i have declared war on japan in the middle ages and everyone likes my culture. Although japan has joined with russia and france and are attacking me. How do i make them stop and how do i make alliances with civilizations myself.
Thanks

when u declare war on a neighbour, involve the rest of the world in the fray otherwise they will gang up on u.
on about equally matched civilisations u will not win in a multi-front war.

If you want friends, it's going to cost you.

The AI will rarely enter a war on your side unless you give them some good reason to. I usually takes a few techs. Or offer gpt and luxuries. If there's a civ that won't sign an alliance, offer one or two gpt just to keep them from declaring war on you, though this does not always work.

If you have MPPs, sign one with another civ, then goad your enemy into attacking you first.

ok so where is the peace treaty in the diplomacy screen. This has got to be the ebst strategy game out there but it is dam hard. Also i cannot seem to get the gunpowder resource and its not like my swordsman are gonna eb able to block bullets with there swords. Is this just bad luck that i am unable to find the gunpowder resource and even the horse resource actually.

If you are at war and want peace, then the peace button is very easy to find, trust me:cool:

You have researched gunpowder right? If so double check around your land for saltpeter (looks like salt funnily enough!). If there is definetely no saltpeter then either buy it from a different country (usually way too expensive to get early on though), or try and capture territory which has some in it. Also remember to build a road over it, and if it's not in your territory link it with a road and build a colony with a worker on it.

One more thing, as you say you are a newbie (hence my graphic explanation above lol), one vital thing to do early on is to expand as much as you can by getting lots of settlers, and building your cities quite spaced out so they have room to live off the land around them. You'll find that if you have settled a lot around a large area, by the time you have researched techs like gunpowder, you should have plenty of resources about.

Hope this has helped:egypt:

If you want allies go to the diplomacy screen and talk to one of the neutral civs. ( You'll need an embassy for military alliances) If you have an embassy you should have a military alliance option tab. Open that and you can choose which civ to have an alliance against. (Note. If that neutral civ is not currently at war with your enemy it will cost a lot to get them in an alliance.)

If you want peace talk to your enemy (if he responds). There should only be 1 option: peace. You have to select a peace treaty if you want to do anything else. That peace treaty will last for 20 turns, after which you can declare "permanent" peace or start a war again without severe diplomatic panalties. Do this with all civs at war with you and you're done.

Yes. The most important thing is to build an embassy with the rival civs. To do this, you must first have the Writing Tech. From the game map, look at your capital city. A star icon will be right next to the capital name. Click on this to start creating embassies. It does cost gold, so make sure you have your treasury high enough to afford it.
As long as you have a road and/or sea (with harbors) network connected to the AI capitals, you can begin trading resources, making Right of Passage agreements, and Military Alliances.
Once you obtain the Nationalism Tech, you can then begin forming Mutual Protection Pacts.

As has been mentioned, to form these agreements just make contact with the civ in question. At the top of your (or their) trade screen you will see the options for alliances and what-not.

Now, you asked how to make them stop. Well, once they gang up on you and declare war, you are in for some serious warfare. They will refuse your envoy (any kind of communications), basically, until you kick their tails in enough that in is in their best interest to make peace.

Try to single out the head honcho, the civ that began the warring in the first place (in your case Japan). Maybe if you pound on them, Russia and France will be more willing to make peace.
