c'mon... u know u've always wanted to see this. chariots with spears. knights with muskets. armored musketeers. horsemen with arrows. tanks with flamethrowers. heck, radar artillery with nukes. civ4 needs the custom unit designer that alpha centauri had.
While at one time I thought I wanted this, I've changed my mind. For much of the game the choices would be trivial and I'd waste much time doing things like fooling with the unit workshop for stuff like "designing" a swordsman.
Perhaps there could be default units already designed and ready for use as the relevant technologies are researched. That way, custom design is only for those who actually want to design units, and it would be possible that a player could go through the entire game without using the workshop and using only the default units provided.
Actually, isn't that the way Alpha Centauri already has it? I am not entirely sure, since I have not played that game in years...please correct me if necessary.
I'm much like Warpstorm; I used to think it would be a neat idea, but, as he says, the options would be limited to the point of pointlessness for most of the game.
In addition, it will lead to balance issues with the AI being unable to match the human in min/maxing units, unless the choices are so strictly regulated that there's no point in not having prepackaged units anyway.
I agree with warpstorm & last conformist. It's a good idea in theory, but the units are already pretty well balanced & the AI couldn't handle it at all.
As much as i like SMAC (and liked thid future in it) i dont think it would be a good idea to put it in a Civ game. It would make it a bit to complicated, and unrealistic. While there were spermans with big shilelds and spears (doh) there never were spear/archers, with big shields, bows, and maybe even a spear......it would be a bit wierd.
It was a nice feature.
The AI couldn't handle my underwater carriers.
It was a effective way to get rid of Yang and Miriam.
With those sub-carriers loaded with planes and planet busters
I simply could sneak in their territory and bomb the hell out
of them.
Most of the abilities made the units too expensive to produce.
The workshop took too much time, because most techs added
something new or something better to your current units.
For me no workshop in civ4,although I'd like to see global
upgrades for all your units like it is done some RTS games.
In those games it is possible to upgrade for example armour,
attack,range,movement,etc by researching it.

This (along with the wasting of game time fiddling with designs) is the reason why I don't want it. The AI is already struggling without having to worry about exploitive unit designs.
There's aleady an editor where you can customize unit outside the game (and thus make them available to all civs in a game, or a select few you choose, or whatever). I don't think having the ability to customize units within a game would add much: as others have said, the AI wouldn't be as smart about it as human players would, and it would often feel like a distraction rather than an asset.
