AlphaCentauri2.info down?

...AC2 is back up, but we find ourselves in an intractable bind for tech support. We need to migrate the domain to a better server host and upgrade the forum software, in addition to some minor obvious fixes. Not minor is the email notifications not working - no one can sign up w/o an activation email. There's no future for the community in that.

---

-In a highly relevant aside, I've long believed that a healthy CFC is good for AC2 - each draws unique signups, and grows the online membership pool of the greater community. I know for a fact that a couple of CFC's staff agree with me that this is not a zero-sum game, and we need to support each other lest other social media formats than forums syphon off everyone and we'll never find a conversation as much as a year old ever again. -So, you know, I'm comfortable about asking for help here.

---

HowEVER, this is a frustrating and depressing subject that I do not post about lightly, nor enjoy publishing my tech weakness about. If you know anyone -preferably someone in our community, of course- reliable, energetic and trustworthy w/ sysop skills who is teh haxxor, could you reach out to help a nurd in a horrible bind? Advice is more than welcome, too...

I got an offer this morning to set up and pay for a droplet on Digital Ocean for us, from someone I trust about as much as I can trust anyone.

I was told to relate to techs:
"AC2 is currently hosted on an old VPS, with circa 2013 hardware and a Debian 8 system. Likely a typical LAMP stack for that period, but with no significant software updates since circa 2015. A proper modern host is available but, even if the current AC2 hosting setup is simple, it will likely take some work to move hosts because of various compatibility issues that would have accumulated over the years."

-Of course, we'd have to add to the work with a SMF upgrade -for several obvious reasons- but it seems obvious that since migrations and upgrades both break stuff left, right, and center, just as well combine the two and eliminate redundant fixing.

I still need someone to do tech... Still trying to reach out to the old standard d00dz. It would be SO much better if guys who knew AC2's backend already, know me already -and vice versa- stepped up. Maybe we can get someone new to do ongoing maintenance if we're moved and set up better, maybe the other way around. Dunno, but I'm trying to get something going.

Solver has been very helpful, not least with advice and helping me think straight on an upsetting subject - but we are talking about a man who hasn't found time to get his own forum up and running as an archive for several years now.

One of my old d00dz had a glance at the server yesterday, and said he'd take it back up over the weekend. -So that much progress...
