Am I missing something to make this work?

Just picked up BTS at Target, installed, patched it to 3.03 and it won't run. Keeps giving me a "This isn't the right CD error." I'm assuming Disc 1 from the expansion is the correct one, as it has the SafeDisc files on it.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug multiple people are having? Should I be using the disc from Warlords or the original instead?

I suppose it could possibly be a Vista issue, but Vista is listed as a supported OS on the box and the original didn't have problems.

I'm stumped, and rather annoyed.

It may be because of SecuROM (or whatever security program CivIV uses), it prevents you from running (by making it so that your computer doesn't recognize the disk even if you have it in your disc tray) when you have a Virtual Image Mounting program running or installed (I'm not sure).

It is really stupid..... I mean I paid for my copy and I just don't feel like switching damn cd's everytime I want to play a different game. They should just implement the system in Galactic Civ2, where you dont need the disc and put the cd-key for the patches and other support (I know it's been said before, but I don't think this SecuROM stuff is stopping piracy so much and only shafts the legit purchasers).

What I said may or may not apply to you.

No virtual drives here, just the real DVD-ROM and yes, I'm sure it's a SafeDisc issue, I'm just confused as to why. No problems with the other two.

Uninstall/reinstall didn't do it. Maybe I'll take it back to Target tomorrow and swap it for a new one, see if it was just a bad disc, though it has no problem reading during install.

Would it be a problem with having Warlords installed? I went and installed the original, Warlords, then BTS with no patching or anything in between.

I don't whether it'll help with your problem, but if you're running on Windows XP and a pretty normal PC, don't touch the 3.03 it creates more problems than it acutally solves. Pick up the 3.02 Patch and the game schould run just fine.

Sometimes I have the same problem (also with other games) that when I have two optical drives, it only works with one of them not both. Why? no idea. So if this is the case try swiching drive.

I'm running on Vista 64-bit, not sure that my PC is normal but it is good hardware. Unfortunately, I don't have two drives. I got one Plextor PX-755SA under the assumption that it was a good drive and I'd not need anything else. Until now, this seems to have been true.

Unfortunately, it seems this is a SafeDisc incompatibility with my drive. I got new discs from Target today and I'm trying 3.02, same error as before. I suppose this mean that 2k games will be refunding my money (regardless of if they want to) but that really isn't what I want.

Hmm? I have no idea, but could it have to do with yor 64-bit system? But otherwise if you by any chance can get your money pumped back in to your wallet by 2k, you could try a download version like www.direct2drive.com for example.

It's possible that the 64-bit is what's doing it but not that likely. The original and Warlords run fine, and the game runs, and checks the CD, and spends a long time checking it. It just isn't getting what it wants from the drive and thus fails. Also, they are somewhat obligated to support 64-bit as the game claims to run on all versions of Vista, and it carries the "Games for Windows" logo. That mandates, among other things:

"2) Compatibility. Games for Windows branded titles work on Windows XP and Windows Vista based PCs, including both 32 and 64 bit editions."

MS is real big about pushing 64-bit versions (as they hope to release Vista's successor as only 64-bit) and they are big about everything working on all their current OSes.

I'm sure the game runs fine in 64-bit Vista, it is just SafeDisc that doesn't like the drive for some reason. Version 4.60, which is what the original uses is fine, version 4.81 which is what they have now has problem. No surprise, these copy protection companies are REALLY overzealous with their checks, some incompatibility is almost assured.

For now, I think I'll wait and see if maybe they patch it to work. If not, I will get my money back. 2k really has little option in the matter, they either issue a refund (since stores don't take back open copies) or I drag them in to small claims over it. However I'll give it a bit as my money back isn't want I really want, I want to play.

I'm fine on 64-bit XP.

Just take it back to Target and exchange. If it does it again, then you know you have a problem.

Already did that. It is almost certainly an incompatibility between my drive and this version of SafeDisc. Pisses me off too since this isn't a no-name drive, it's a Plextor.

I'm going to prod at 2k Games and hopefully they will prod at MacroVision and get a fix out for it.

I'm almost tempted to take it back to Target and force the return issue. Not because I don't understand the whole "No returns on computer software," even if I do think it is a little stupid, but because they like to lie about it. They claimed it was "Federal copyright law," that they not takes returns. I'm tempted to go in there with a copy of Title 17 (which I have read) and say "Ok, find the law." :D

I had that happen once, try putting the disk in the drive you installed it from.

Well, to start off, you should not have installed the 3.03 patch. My suggestion is you uninstall BtS (keeping Civ4), install again and afterwards patch it to version 3.02 and try again. That will *PROBABLY* fix the problem.

Another way out is for you to find a no-cd crack, in case it exists (personally have no idea), which is not illegal and might just get your game running fine.

Or get a refund and buy the direct2drive version - which doesn't required the disk

Im sure ive read lots of vista-related problems on these forums regardless of the "Games for Windows" logo. vista & games just dont mix well.

Had a similar problem, and tech support got me up and running - basically, had me copy both discs to the dardrive, reboot in safe mode, then install from the harddrive. Worked fine, and the game has run normally since.

So, short answer, give the tech support guys a call - they were friendly and helpful.

Have been running BTS with no problems, even with 3.03, but I'm just now getting this error.
