An available alternative way of inserting smilies?

When posting, you either manually type in smilies, or click the smilie that you want from the smilie box. I know the codes for most smilies, but for the more complex and rare ones I click on them. The thing is, when you click on a smilie, it goes to the end of the post. Is there a way that it can go to where the cursor is? If not (which is probably the case), does anyone know if this feature will be included in a future vB update?

It's not a major hassle (rarely do I need to click instead of type a smilie anyway), but it would still be nice if my idea comes true. And it would probably be very useful for the newer posters, who haven't gotten used to the smilie codes.

BTW, a side question: What is enhanced vB code mode? (You can get it by clicking the bubble for enhanced mode in the vB Code box, found just above the quick smilie box [at least in classic CFC style]). The description says, "Enhanced mode: allows complex nesting of tags." What in the world does that mean?

I do that too (when I don't just type it). Like Napoleon said, it's only mildly annoying.

I about never use smilies instead of the :),:(,. :goodjob: one's.... but I can see how this feature could be of use.

Also... I am interested in knowing what the "Enhanced Mode" is also.

In normal mode, if you click on one of the little buttons like "B" for bold, it opens a little dialog box to insert your text and then places the whole "[ B ] Whatever [ /B ]" into the box (without the extra spaces, of course.)

In enhanced mode, if you click on the Button, it inserts the opening tag (e.g. "[ B ]" ) so that you can type some and then hit the "Close Current Tag" Button to insert the end tag (e.g. "[ /B ]"). It's not particularly enhanced to me as i find it far easier to just type the darned things, but perhaps someone uses it :)

See the relevant FAQ question which I at first couldn't find and tried to explain in my own words above.

As for smilies, if I don't know it, I normally just put my mouse over the smiley; this shows the code for it in the status line of IE at the very bottom of the window, and then I type it in. For instance, putting the mouse over the eek smiley ( ) shows this in the status bar: javascript:smilie(': eek:') (again w/o the space) and I would type what's in the quotes. It's quicker to me than inserting it, and then moving it from the end of the post to where I want it to be. Whether having stuff inserted at the current insertion point is planned or even possible within the limitations of javascript, I can't say, but I'd like to see it too :)

WillJ, you could of course insert a smiley while you're typing.
Yeah, but when in the "momentum" of typing a post, it's sometimes hard to stop, click one of the smilies, and keep on going.

:goodjob: Thanks, I get it now. I think I like enhanced more than normal. (I always hated those non-closable windows that you typed your coded stuff into.) Of course, I normally type in the simple codes (, , etc.) myself.

How do posters insert smilies that aren't in the forum smilie list? I've seen some really cool ones being used, but I don't know how to insert them, except as an image (which puts the "SirJethro has attached this image" line in).

Would these be "secret smilies". I like saying that. I want my own secret smilie. :D

Those aren't attachments but embedded images with "[ img]picture URL[ /img]" (w/o the spaces of course).

For example, inserting "[ img]http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads4/pdescobar_cow_smiley.gif[ /img]" into this post results in:
pdescobar_cow_smiley.gif

@SirJethro: To upload an image, scroll down to the bottom of the screen (in pretty much any CFC screen: a forum, a thread, the post-reply screen, etc.) to where you see "Upload File." Click it, upload your file from your hard drive, then when the "File Upload Successful" window pops up, click the "sort by date" column (if necessary, click it however many times it takes to sort it by date so that the newest one is on the top). The file that you just uploaded should be at the top. Right click it, select "properties," and then copy and paste the hyperlink that it gives you in the properties window. Then do what pdescobar said, pasting the link that you just copied. Of course, if the image you want is already on the Internet somewhere, you can just use the link for that picture (keyword: picture; not just the URL of the site that the picture is on), instead of going through the directions I just gave you.

Unlike the attachment feature, the tags can go anywhere you want (top, middle, or bottom of post), including being able to insert them between text, like you would with a smilie. Also, TF has said that he wants users to always use the upload feature instead of the attachment feature, since the attachment feature is quite a load on the server, while the upload server is seperate from the main forum server.

Hope this helps. :)

Oh.... I tried out the enchanced mode and I like just typing it in. I've memorized all the codes ( , , , [COLOR], [SIZE],

QUOTE]But remember that they don't have to be capitalized (and it's normally easier to not capitalize them). :)
