... and other aerated soft drinks.

India's most popular and revered Yoga guru, Swami Ramdev, beloved of the conservatives for his patriotism and love for his country and religion, and equally beloved of the liberals for his ardently and uncompromisingly reformist attitude, asked people to try out an experiment.

He told them to take a bottle of Coca-Cola, and to use it in place of toilet cleaner (like Harpic) next time they felt like cleaning their toilets.

I tired it.

It worked better than the cleaner.

Since then, I've given up aerated drinks altogether. My relatives tell me that in Haryana, the larger bottles of Coke are unavailable to normal consumers - farmers buy them wholesale for use against a certain pest (though this is hearsay, and not confirmed).

I'd like the people here at CFC to try out the same, and tell me their results. If this turns out to be applicable to the US versions of Coke as well, then Coca-Cola corporation has some serious explaining to do.

Ive never heard of those uses of coke.

I like pepsi better though anyway. Is coke too expensive for indians or something? Why dont you like it?

You guys have evidentally never tried drinking Harpic. :yumyum:

Coca-Cola can be used to a lot!

A friend of mine uses it to remove rust from old farming equipment he fixes. After the Coke has done its job he just needs to clean off the sugar which is much easier.

Knowing this and other things Cola can do I still drink a lot of it. Coca-Cola tastes good and I can live (at least for several decades) with the fact that it has some unhealthy properties. :)

I don't see a downside really. Tastes good and kills bacteria? Win-win.

In Africa they use Coca Cola as a contraceptive. It kills Sperm.

And im not kidding.

I thought that was debunked on Mythbusters?

Anyway, I don't drink cola, much. Although I do drink three liters of pepsi max a day. However, I also eat a lot of garlic, and acording to a recent study, onion and garlic reduces the chance of getting cancer, so I hope that the garlic evens out the drink.

If they did I didnt see that episode (kinda glad too) ;)

According to this site: http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/sperm.asp

It does kill sperm but shouldn't be considered as a adaquate contraceptive. I dont think anyone really thought that anyway.

So that must be why people said mountain dew lowers your sperm count. :crazyeye:

I always thought those people were gullible idiots. Its still not true anyway.

Hey, you can also use it to clean metal. The Mythbusters have done a ton of things that delt with Coca-Cola and other soft drinks :D. Here is the rundown on it:

Cola Myths

Cola is able to...
...remove bloodstains. Confirmed. The cola was able to emulsify bloodstains.
...clean rust. Busted. The cola was unable to break down rust deposits.
...act as a toilet cleaner. Not in this episode. This chapter of the myth was not shown in this episode. See Special 4 — "MythBusters Outtakes".
...clean chrome. Confirmed. It surprisingly cleaned the chrome better than the commercial chrome polish used for comparison.
...dissolve a tooth overnight. Busted. The tooth did start to dissolve, indicating that with enough time it could be completely dissolved. However, the acidic solution used for comparison was much more effective in dissolving the tooth.
...dissolve a steak. Busted. The cola just gave the steak a soft, pasty consistency.
...clean a penny. Partly Confirmed Results were good. The only part of the coin that was not cleaned was an area where a bubble had formed.
...clean battery terminals. Plausible. It works, but it was hard to tell if plain water did not perform just as well. The cola did not do anything spectacular.
...remove greasy stains in your laundry. Busted. No effect at all.
...degrease engines. Busted. The cola did not remove any of the grease.
...kill sperm. Busted. The MythBusters added cola to some slides and saline solution to others. They counted the number of live sperm they could see through a microscope camera in one minute, and found that the number of live sperm in both saline and cola was relatively the same. With the help of Dr. Turek they determined that cola doesn't do much more than dilute the sperm.
Cola can be used as a toilet cleaner. Busted. For this myth, Adam dirtied M5's bathroom with engine oil in preparation for the cleanup. Jamie was greatly upset at this, but Adam assured him he'd be able to clean it. Adam tried to clean with cola, which only made the problem worse. Adam eventually cleaned using a regular all-purpose cleanser which worked well.

I heard that before, I think is because of its pH is acidic enough to kill sperm. but only in contact to it. Nothing happens if it is swallowed. (the coke, not the... oh forget about it)

That can explain why it is a good cleaner too. although I doubt of this latter use since coke has a lot of sugar and might leave limelike white spots. Never tried.

I use it to clean oxidation off battery terminals.I hate to be captain obvious but on the list of ingrediants it has both citric acid and phosphoric acid. Guess what acids do?

I can see why coke would clean limescale off your toilet, but that's about it. Sugar solutions of any kind, particularly those as strongly sugary as coke are antibacterial in the same way salt is although to a lesser degree. Sugar acts to kill bacteria by desicating cells, in other words it inhibits water uptake by osmosis.

I once did a series of experiments to find out if chocolate milk would go off more slowly than normal milk as it had more sugar and found it did, I also tried milk with sugar in to make sure it was the sugar content and not something else and the more sugar the less quickly the milk went off. Science is fun :)

I drink DIET Coke. So I'm okay!

Science is fun. It's also fun to read a post and thing "off, off what? off to where? I don't get it." Then that one little brain cell you have left jiggles and you realize off = rancid.

Two nations seperated by a common language; I forget that sorry:) . In England if someone says they're off, a commonly stupid reply is: I thought there was a funny smell in here.
