An old discovery i had stumbled upon regarding city gfx

Well I've tested it in game myself and can see with my own eyes that larger cities are here to stay. Great news. I've already started tearing some of Red Alert's city packs apart! In the meantime I cam up with the attached template for a double sized city if anyone finds it useful. It's simplicity itself to be honest but if anyone has a use for it then it's worth posting.

Note - the template is in rgb as different city sets will require different palattes, remember to convert to indexed when you're finished.

As I understand it, anything that we already know can be re-scaled to add more, ie unit32 sheets, resources, etc. would not be affected by changing sizes, as those aren't the same as the city files for instance.

You're confusing scale with extension. Those are two quite different transformations.

:goodjob: That's what i'm talkin' 'bout! You da man! It looks like it's the proportion algorithm (thirds across fourths down). So we've got another degree of freedom in graphics creation.

Hold on a minute, you are surprised to know that? You kept asking the same question over and over again, and I told you over and over again the answer.

Now you claim that you say it's the proportion algorithm, I told you that pages ago.

I even spelled it out for you so you could grasp the concept. I guess this 'speculator' as you referred to me as... was correct.

I've seen a lot of informed speculation... Since the speculators have acknowledged... Hypotheticals are not useful...

The game probably takes the Image size and divides it up so it knows what cities are where. For instance, if the PCX size is 1000x1000, it determines where the cities are by dividing the width by 3 (by 3 because their is a town, city, and metro), and the height by 4 (by 4 because of the 4 eras). So this PCX, game would determine each city square is 333.33x250. The question is what does it do for values such as 333.33? Sizes like this will cause each city square not to be the same proportions. It probably rounds down to 333, and makes one of them 334.

Then the center of each 333x250 square is where the city center is located.

The Probable way it works through observation. Without source, it is still only 'probable', as I stated. Thanks for listening.

Having taught everything from addition to abstract algebra, written programs in 4 languages, as well as graphics experience of over 20 years, I think I got both concepts (proportional & set values) a long time ago. I never said your theories weren't correct. I asked for empirical confirmation. And gave you props when the experimental results were posted. That's how it works in the real world - science, engineering, medicine, whatever. ;)

I'm not understanding people's responses... Somehow I'm not making myself understood... All I'm asking about is the way the game engine (hard-coded) copes with a differently sized city pcx file...

Apparently you didn't grasp the concept at all... saying you did and posting your Job Resume is irrelevant. I'm not hiring.

You did the same crap to Yang Liu about his Elephants and he proved you dead wrong, then there were complaints about him writing too much on his page for explaining the facts. This was after blasting his units for not being historically correct (when they were according to the discussion, I'm no history buff).

Calling me some kind of speculator with no proof to back crap up, will get responses just as such. There is still no proof, only observation. That is how it works here, because Civ 3 is not the real world.

On my merry way,
Tom

Would both of you mind calming down and discussing this affair... privately?

I have been told privately that my tone was pretty obnoxious. I didn't intend that at all. I was concerned that none of us invest time creating graphics that then are unusable & have to be redone. This has happened in the past. But if I create rancor I make things worse rather than better. I do appreciate the work tom2050, as well as many others, do for all of us. I hope I haven't permanently damaged anyone's working relationships. I will make an effort to express my passion in a more clearly positive way in the future.
