Anchor, or why civilization-changing is not important per se

you can easily have the option you want is what we say.

I'm sorry I know you are a modder (and I do appreciate the work) but we're talking about Firaxis' vanilla devolopment and game design, not what mods can potentially change and fix (assuming they even get mod tools capable of properly addressing all the issues many of us don't like, which are baked into its design....)

Addressing that mods can change the game doesn't address the actual concern or point being raised. If everything is a set of game properties than what is stopping Firaxis from changing the theme of the series from human civilizations and history to anime characters devoloping mech-future soceties who swap fantasy cultures complete with battling robots? It's all just window dressing right?

It's not about mods here.

and what is that concern/point in relation to what is proposed in this thread?

what defines your Civilization in the game ? what if you keep the names, icons, color, ethnic style for units/building but just change the age related abilities until you are in your civilization historical age ?

I think you're missing the point of the thread. I believe the OP is not keen on switching in terms of flavour (like you), it's just that, in their words, "Civ-changing is a by-product of other design decisions".

And I think that is probably right. The whole flow of the game is not dependent on this switching idea, but once you implement an Age structure, the option to include switching becomes possible. As does turning all civs into orcs and robots, but I'm not sure why that is relevant.

If it's all just a set of properties and nothing is important and only gameplay matters than why not make Civilization a game about aliens and fantasy races? You can keep the gameplay while making everyone orcs that morph into magi that morph into dreadlord necromancers lead by an Elf as long as you keep the name, color, icon, etc.

Certainly hoping for another Fall from Heaven II mod. ❤️
