Ancient Forests?

i agree the art could use a little work, but i do not get so hung up over it :P i do not think the problem is quite as bad as you say it is :D

I dont understand. I haven't noticed the row pattern. I kinda' like the graphics too. Sorry you find them annoying. :(

My beef is with the diseased promotion and how a stack inflicted with it will cough, one at a time, to let me know.

The main problem with the Ancient forest graphics is that they use the same graphics for every tile, whereas normal forests have a variety of graphics. Once the forests become ancient, all the land looks the same. Logically, ancient forests should probably be more unique than the newly grown ones. Also, older trees would tend to be darker, whereas the ancient forest uses a lighter, brighter green than newer ones.

Ah, I just went back to my game and turned off the yield graphics, I tend to leave them on so I don't forget to develop all available tiles. Now I can see the diagonal row pattern.

Looking again at the Ancient Forest graphics, I like them even more. The trees are taller, darker, and have much sturdier and longer trucks like I would expect in an old forest.

Maybe I need further adjustment of my settings to see the "lighter" Ancient Forests, mine appear much darker than normal forests. :/

Yeah thats what i think. It really gets on my nerves for some reason. Oh well lol.

I think it's also that the ancient forest trees don't extend to the edge of the tile, but are just a diagonal clump of trees in the middle of the tile. this means that it looks more like lines. if it extended to the edge of the tile then it'd look more like a forest like the other forests do.

it is so easy to burn ancient forests that treants less effective. it'd be harder to raid the elves if you couldent just burn down their forest. burning your allies forrest is also a effective way of slowing down the elves. but then sometimes i deal with treants instead of burning the forests if i want to utelize the elves tree towns.

I avoid FoL because I greatly dislike the Ancient Forest graphics as well. I wonder if one would be able to make ancient forests be randomly shaped like regular forests (to avoid the same ugly pattern like ancients have), but differ in tree style like the evergreen and deciduous forests do?

Hm, I like the ancient forest looks, it gives more satisfaction to know that you've turned your whole empire into a uniform dark mysterious land of trees. I've never noticed the row pattern.

On the burning thing, I agree it's very annoying, do ancient forests have a lower chance of catching fire? if you have good roads you can always shuttle around adepts with spring, but that's annoying. The real problem is that the moment flames appear, your towns vanish. I'd say that it'd be nicer if the got pillage one level per turn by flames, except when you stop flames manually, the forest diassapears altogether, and you have to raze your town anyway, if you want to bloom again. Maybe towns should also lowered the chance of flames, after all, most people have a mild aversion to seeing their homes burned to the ground :) .

On the other hand, playing against the fellowship, I'm always reluctant to try to fireball/meteor their lands to death because there's a good chance that a treant will show up to punch my face in.

Yeah thats what id like too. Liek i said i dont play FOL very often but when ive played against them ive never thought they were very easy to burn at all.

yes, ancient forests do burn, and the AI elves don't know how to put it out. do near their land with a mage, fireball some random barbarian in a connected forest, and then you'll burn down all their forest and towns. But my tactic is to use spring when I attack the elves, I need meteors to knock down the city defenses, but I’m always fast in putting out the smoke, as I want all those ancient forest towns for myself, and I don’t even need to hassle with FoL to get a land full of ancient forest towns.

skeletons are great at distracting tre-ants.
it also seems like there is a chance of it spawning when a unit enters a unocupied tile, but not when the tile is occupied.

so if 9 meteors travel across the land then each one has a chance of spawning a treant each step. but if you move closer to next to the city, or first place skeletons on the plots, then there won't be any chance of a treant later when each of the 9 metiors travel across the land.

That's a surprise. I thought the Ancient Forests would not burn. Thanks for correcting us. Maybe in a previous version they were immune, or maybe my memory is off.

I think it was in version .021 (my first) that I overran the elves in MP with arch-mages. I meteored the hell out of everything that moved, but the old forests seem to survive.

yes, i read in the wiki a while ago that they didn't burn in earlier versions, but i was definutly dealing with a lot of flames in the ancient forest last night.

My own main problem when playing Ljosafar with Ancient Forests, is that it is very difficult to get a nice visual of improvements beneath them. Sometimes it is quite useful to recognize just at a glance if you have a cottage, a farm or nothing at all. With ancient forests it all looks like the same.

turning on yields makes this easy to spot. although i agree the graphics of improvements could be more substantial.
