Ancient Ruins map does nothing?

I keep on getting a goody hut with a map, and when I discovered everything around it, it still gives me a map, and does absolutely NOTHING. Like 80% of the time I get a map of the surrounding area.

The map is never really useful, unless it shows you where more ancient ruins are. I tend to get the "reveals barbarian encampments" alot, which I don't care for

I always disable the goody huts. They are completely random and can have substantial impact.

You might as well be playing paper, rock, scissors with the AI.

There's a mod in the workshop that disables both the map and encampments ruins.

If nothing happens (visibly), it could indicate a culture bonus. That bonus isn't reported, but you can view it at the top bar to have increased your culture with 30.

The huts are silly anyway, popping mining or pottery for free means oh derp derp sword rush and library slingshot GG.

I may shut off goody huts after reading this thread. You are right... they do add a bit of randomness that isn't necessary.

I like randomness and I like scarchers.

It pains me when my first scout is out and I meet an AI spearsman: "Darn you fool! That goodyhut was mine, now I'm gonna hate you for the rest of this game!"

I'm ok with ruins, but lately I feel I'm getting converted to the "No-ruin crowd", they can make a big difference in the game. So maybe ignore scouts already and just build a warrior instead? From Emp and higher, I turn them off, but lower games doesn't take that much concentration and I leave them on.

But on my settler-games, they will be turned on! :)

Goody huts are only as lucky as starting location imo, sometimes they benefit you greatly but most of the times they just reveal barbs camps, again.

The worst feeling is when you watch an AI's scout take the ruin you were gonna grab next turn and they turn into a scarcher. I shout "HEY! that's my scarcher! NOOOO!!"

I like having ruins on. I love the randomness of them. The AI already has so many advantages, why not give them so more? :p

I like it when you get an ancient map of the...

...ocean!

Did somebody find a blank piece of paper?

I think the goodyhuts are a nice feature...and most of the time you do get something useful....though I suppose it's a bit like Christmas gifts as a child...always slightly disappointed there isn't something better...;)

I think my numero uno hope is for 20 culture points....then maybe the advanced technology, but only if it's not one I've almost finished researching.

I wonder how this goodyhut system works? When you find new ruins, does the "yield" depend on what you have already received? Or is it totally random and preset?

I don't like it when my scout becomes an archer before I can get the unique scout promotions for him. It would be nice if the first level scout promotions would open up the second and third level promotions even after the scout upgrades.

I might have some insight... I made a couple maps where I gave my starting area a boatload of goodiehuts for a cheat...

The reward seemed to follow an order. ONce I had one of each it started over again like a perfect round robin-

I suspected as much...that the goodyhut rewards are referenced to the human player.... In one game that was unusually "rich" in goodyhuts, I was able to secure 20 culture points twice....though the second time was on a much larger base and, although nice, almost unnoticable....:)

I wonder how the algorithm works for the AI???

On Emperor and above, the AI gets a free World Wonder and four melee units. Only kidding; it just feels that way sometimes.

Early Focus on goody huts has high opportunity costs but can give you a really good start.

Depending on map (e.g. continents, terra, pangaea) and starting location, building 2-3 scouts early and scouting extensively can give you a dozen or more goody huts which usually divide more or less to to equal parts into
- unit upgrade
- reveal map
- reveal barbs
- gold
- culture
- faith
- tech
- +1 population

You sacrifice growth and delay production of granary or monument, but with some luck you can get 1-3 of free pop, 1-3 free tech, 1-3 culture boni, an early panteon, 1-2 scarcher, etc. Especially when playing on epic or marathon speed this is a big advantage since early techs and growth take forever. Free archery, husbandry, mining or pottery is always welcome since it offers early opportunity to wonders from different tech paths (e.g. Artemis Temple and StoneHenge and GL) which may otherwise not be possible because of long research times. If you run out of goody huts you can still use the scouts/scarchers and warrior to kill barbs and raze barb camps.

This strategy relies on luck, statistics and map type. It is easier to scout a huge desert or plains than a land of forest / jungle hills with mountains.
