And then there is no iron

I'm playing a game on Emperor level, big continents, against seven AI opponents.

I live in the biggest continent with other four civs and, incredibly, nobody has iron in my continent.

Is it a bug? I read somewhere C3C has some issues with resources.

It makes no sense to me, only two or three iron sources in the whole world.

I totally dislike horsemen, archers and longbowmen. They suck. I can't go to war with such weak units. I need iron.

And since I'm new to Conquests, I suppose I might face similar problems in my game with other important resources like uranium, is it right?

Explanations about resources in C3C?

Thank you.

I still prefer the old way of resousres (Vanilla CIV3).C3C has change a lot the calculations of apearence for the resourses and not for the best. Not only for the strategic ones but for luxuries also.In most of my games if i get 1-2 luxuries it is a miracle,so trade has became more difficult than ever.

Which map size do you play in this game? I assume medium, because of the seven AI opponents.I usually play on huge maps, which are more resistent against such oddities in ressource distribution.

I do not mind the decreased resource count, as I like the competition for the limited supply. But I will admit it is frustrating when your biggest competitor in the world gets four out of every five resources that appear (and they control less territory than do you).

I once, after gaining control of my entire home continent, amounting to 54% of world land area, found out I had no oil. Unfortunately for them, the idiots on the other continent sold me some, which I used to build a big pile of Tanks and Bombers, with which I then went over and took over their oil, as well as the rest of their earthly possessions.

It is a new part of the game.
A new part that was supposed to be there before though.

Aquiring the needed resources now is an issue to think about, you need to do somethings to get them, including using units that you think suck.

I can only advise you to try and fight with many catapults, acompanied by spearmen and whatever attacking unit available (archer, longbow, horses) If you havent tried it before, you will be amazed as you will barely lose any units while fighting armies twice the size of yours.

of course the resources not being on your continent at all makes things a bit more difficult since you will need to go to another continent to conquer them, but it is pretty well possible.

Thanks everybody for the replies.

I like that the idea of making resources more rare to estimulate competition for them, but maybe Firaxis didn't implemented it in the correct manner.

Yes, I play on medium size maps, but you gave me a good idea, Im going to try a game on huge map to see what happen.

Is it possible games with no certain resources or luxuries in it? Have you ever played a game without, for instance, rubber or wine in the whole world?

I have never played, nor heard about, a game with absolutely non of a particular resource/luxury.

I have however, played a Sg where we CHOSE to use no resources. (HERE ) Although we were the Vikings and used the Berserks to great effect, we also had some successful early fighting using only archers and warriors. We won by conquest in 1550 ad. :)

I once played a game with not a single source of gems. And I think it was the original. I remembered, because I controlled most of the world, yet still missed gems. I tried to trade with all the remaining civs, and not one of them had gems, not even a source they were already using. Scouring the map showed that there were no gems at all.

The resource "density", ie, the civ/resource ratios, are gonna stay the same.

Yes, it doesn't depend on map size...but they, as the examples in this thread show, are sometimes mixed up by interfering variables. One I heard of is the terrain distribution which leads sometomes to situations in which there is not enough room for ressources (maybe there must be a min distance between every source of strategic ressources). On huge maps with a lot of land such problems occur less - I never experienced such drastic problems.
In other words - it is extremly unlikely to have a huge map without a single source of a ressource.

I just played a game(C3C, tiny, archipelago, 80%) where the only luxuries were 2 dyes, 1 wine and 1 spice! All on the same island too.

Someone told me before in this forum that is possible not have some luxury resouces in C3C games even in large/huge maps, But the strategic resources always have to be all available.
One thing that always happens to me (and I've played several C3C games) is that I never have coal in my lands, always have to "take it" from someone else. Its boring because it is when you must need it (making railroad=prepare for war) that you don't have.

I always play small maps and used to default to wet/warm worlds. In PTW this gave you a very good chance of having no oil anywhere in the world. Mostly because there was no Tundra or Desert anywhere. Your best offensive punch was a Marine with arty support. Made for some interesting endgames.

In C3C thats not a problem as Oil shows up under Marsh (or former Marsh) tiles.

Smaller maps sometimes lack a luxury or so, indeed. Tiny maps rarely have all eight.

The paucity of strategic resources is pretty much the entire point. Why have resources when everyone has enough? That's what makes it interesting.

You may want to consider the strategy I just used in my present game with some luck. I was on an island surrounded by ocean, so not trading until magnatism. I found an island with iron on it, but usless otherwise. So I built a city on it, built a baracks and sent warriors over there to upgrade. Needs loads of cash though, but the wariors made sure I kept up in tech ;)
