Antonius Block's Learning Experience 1: Zulu Dawn

Okay it is 670 BC again

670 BC (0): Change capital to settler and MM to go 2/2. Change Bapedi to impi. Change Mpondo to worker

650 BC (1): Lost our scout. Ulundi builds worker starts barracks.

630 BC (2): Zim builds settler starts another. Learn Writing start Math.

610 BC (3): Whip temple in Isandlwana.

590 BC (4): Build temple start worker.

570 BC (5): The Persians are coming.

550 BC (6): Politely ask the 2 archers warrior and spear to leave they refuse and declare war. Found Swazi to the south.

530 BC (7): A ver archer promotes on defence to elite. The same archer is knocked to 1 hit point and produces a great leader. Send the leader safely to Bapedi there is nothing of interest to rush yet. Maybe the Great Library? or the FP?

510 BC (8): Almost all cities are producing military units. Not much to do.

490 BC (9): Shuffle some units to protect the horses.

470 BC (10): More movement.

450 BC (11): Found Tugela near the iron. Only 1 Persian spear remains. Math is due in 3 turns. There is a great leader in the capital.

I’ve come back to continue the Blocka Zulu franchise which had fallen off my radar, and this time with screenshots!

450 BC- Before the turn;

Hlobane production of horseman hurried; 2 citizens die in stampede.
Bapedi also brought under the whip as crowd kills one citizen during Impi production hurry.
Mpondo archer production changed to worker. Mpondo archer awoken to fight barbarian horseman which he kills to attain veteran status.
Offturn: Bapedi Impi> worker.
Hlobane Horseman>Impi
Islandwhana worker>barracks

1)430 BC- Hot’s archer kills a Persian spearman on the road between bapedi and ulundi.
Our target is Bactra now.
Offturn: Zimbabwe horseman>worker (to stave off the non-population growth from 6 as we have no aquaduct).
Ulundi horseman>impi.
Hlobane goes sour, I’ll appoint an entertainer.
Intombe archer>worker (I like to make jobs).

2)410 BC- Blocka’s vision for the army: “I see a northern front consisting of Impi and horsemen for taking cities in an eastward jab to claim horses and iron from the Persians. The south will be patrolled by my excellent archers as infrastructure is built up.”
Offturn: Zimbabwe worker>horseman.

3)390 BC- slow progress.
Offturn: barbarian trouble in the NW but our confrontational tactics so far holding the ground.
Mathematics learned, I turn our attention to Literature, hoping to make the use of the leader in nabbing the Great Library.

4)370 BC- Archer in the south uncovers Persian spearmen, settlers on the move.

Picture one: "Who's out there?"

5)350 BC- last chance for diplomacy before our northern army takes Bactra is unsatisfactory, Persia think we owe them something. Zulu riders, Charge!!!

-First rider swoops in and deals a minor injury to the 1st enemy spear regiment before he dies.
-Second rider promoted to elite as he kills the 2nd and only other enemy spear regiment.

-3rd rider goes elite killing the last spearman. Bactra, a tiny village after all, collapses into rubble. Ngome build changed to a settler who will take the land for a new settlement when he appears after 3 turns.
-4th rider guts a Persian archer on the north plain, and rides into the rubble of Bactra to support the wounded liberator.

-1st Impi goes elite killing an archer in the pine woods nearby, and our CIVILIZATION ENTERS A GOLDEN AGE!!!

-2nd Impi deployed to guard worker who came out of Bactra.

-3rd Impi deployed into Bactra rubble for defense- there are several Persian riders nearby.

Offturn: Golden Age starting Impi is killed by a charging horseman. Barbarians attack several cities. Zimbabwe horseman>impi. Ulundi impi>archer. Intombe worker>granary. Mpondo worker>barracks.

Picture 2: The Impi who sent us Golden and the rubble of Bactra.

6) 330 BC: Armies retreating to Bapedi, Impi kills elite horseman, our horseman kills one of their horsemen.
Offturn: Persia offers straight up peace. I don’t think so.
Bapedi worker>granary (for the peace to come).
Islandwhana barracks>Impi.

7)310 BC: workers are on top of the iron in the north. 1 Bapedi impi dies, the other goes elite killing a Persian spearman who was threatening to pillage the dye improvements. Still can’t get a tech offer from Persia.
Offturn: one of their spearman captures a worker at Mpondo (stupid me), and one of their horsemen kills one of our Impi in the northeast.
Zimbabwe impi>worker.
Ulundi gets an entertainer.
Ngombe settler>barracks.

8)290 BC: the warrior from Tugela puts an end to the NW barbs.
Our southern archer destroys Samaria and captures 28 gold SINGLEHANDEDLY. Persians reportedly “close to a deal” of tech for peace.
Offturn: 1 archer kills their archer and is killed in mountain south of Sidon. Hot’s archer in northern woods killed by their horseman.
Zimbabwe worker>horseman

9)270 BC: One of our Impis attacks and kills their northern horseman. Our forces in the field are spent, and I’m inclined to make peace with Persia: they’ll give us 40 gold and exchange Mapmaking for mathematics. Not the best deal, but I can’t see the odds getting better as we flounder with no armies forward. We’ll face them again. I take the deal.
Offturn: Hlobane Impi>harbor.

10)250 BC: Iron is online. Ulundi production changed to our first swordsman. Swazi temple changed to galley; the goal is to try to get, unmanned, in contact with another Civ to take advantage of the library.

Offturn:

11)EXTRA INNINGS:
230 BC: Nothing much.
Offturn: Zimbabwe horsemen>swordsman.
Islandwhana Impi>granary.
Swazi galley>Impi.

12) 210 BC: Swazi warrior boards galley for a journey in search of the others.
Offturn: Got literature, going for philosophy.
Ulundi swordsman>temple.
Mpondo barracks>impi.
Tugela barracks>impi (city needs a harbor, too).

13)190 BC. Not much…
Offturn: not much…

14)170 BC. Mpande consumed to make the Great Library- science funding set to zero.
Umtata built on the eaves of Arbela. First build to be temple. This is where we will hit them from.
