Is there anyone here?

I had a look at the aowheaven forums, and it appears that at least some people still play/mod the game.

I remember playing it years ago, when it hit the stores.

I am thinking of perhaps trying to mod it, since i guess my myriad gfx for civ3 could be readily used in it.

I remember to have enjoyed age of wonders 1 to 2

I have a question here. Age of Wonders were some of the most awesome turn based games of all time. I want to get back into them.

I have Age of Wonders 2 on my computer (I dunno why). I'm thinking of waiting for Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic to be available on gog.com (it says it's coming soon). It was the AOW 2 expansion that became a full fledged game in the end.

I had AOW 1 a long time ago. I'm considering buying it on gog.com. I remember its music was awesome...

I can't remember the games well enough though. I don't remember if there is a debate between AOW1 and the next iterations. I'm not sure it's worth going back to AOW1 when AOW: Shadow Magic is about to be made available on gog.com.

What you say?

AoM Shadow Magic is available on impulsedriven.com (run by stardock). It's the best game of the series by far, and yes, i still play it!

I owned both aoe1 and aoe:shadow magic, but i didnt like the latter that much. The music is better in 1 too.

But both are very good games...

You started the thread talking about AOW2. I'm pretty sure AOW: Shadow Magic is better than AOW2 at the very least. The debate for me was more between AOW1 and AOW: Shadow Magic.

And thanks Till for the information. I just realized they're also available on Steam... But yeah, I was really hoping to get my hands on the gog.com version. When they're available there, I prioritize it.

Did play a fair bit of shadow magic using the unofficial fanmade patch. Very good game - if only the AI was a bit better. Would play again if someone made a decent AI mod.

Well I just realized the whole trilogy (20$) or each individual games (5$, 10$ and 10$) are also available on gamersgate.com.

Well I guess That solves my problem. Too bad for GOG if they can't be bothered to beat the other distribution services in speed. Gamers Gate also allows me to keep the install files on backups and such.

Don't get me wrong, I use Steam a lot, but when I can get games on another platform with install files which are independant from a specific software, I usually go for that. Steam is mostly awesome for their draconian sales on still-newish games. (Watch Civ 5 go for a week-end deal at half price within a year from now).

I still have and occasionally play AoW 1 and 2.

The 1 has a long campaign with different choices and heroes/artifcats that you can choose to keep from one step to the following. You can also choose into the whole list of abilities/stats when you upgrade a hero.

The 2 has a long campaign but it's more like 6 little ones (with 3 scenariis each) since each time you begin anew with another magic book and can't carry on your champions.

1 feels a little more RPG and 2 a little more like Civ (with more strategy involving cities/towers/facilities).

I should consider buying AoW-SM.

Oh man, did I like AOW2: Shadow Magic. Some of the maps that people made (check http://aow2.heavengames.com/) make me think I like it more than FFH2, which I played and liked a lot, and to be fair, is hard to compare since AOW2 had a better RPG feel and FFH2 has a better empire building feel. If my gaming time was not being taken up by RoM/AND and MW2, I would still be playing it.

I got the game a shortly after my last post. Tried two games. Getting my lower-end handed to me the first game I played. It was a four-people map, we were all at war. They all zoomed towards my capital. I saw big stacks of 3 different colors ignore each others and zooming onto me. Well that was that. Here goes a wasted hour and a half of apparently poor play. Kind of frustrating, wasting 90 minutes doing something wrong. I always have a problem gauging how quickly I'm supposed to explore or develop things, in many strategy games. I can't quite grasp the pace of a game until I've spent like 10 hours playing it.

Anyway, back on topic, my second game seems to be going a little better. But maybe it's because of the map. I'm underground and the main way to move around is through a network of underground rivers. I tried to capture as many mines and whatnot as possible, but I keep getting them annoyingly stolen by units of the AI. So I have a few towns and not enough army to defend them, yet I'm almost losing money.

I seem to never be making enough money to have a decent army, despite doing my best to hold on to income buildings and growing up my town. I have enough money to either turtle there and defend my position and achieve nothing, or go out and explore and see a random hero come from nowhere and steal my town 'cause my army was trying to achieve something. This is one of the reasons I never was a huge fan of multi-layer maps. It's one of the things that probably make me wanna play HoMM2 more than HoMM3, the underground world.

I guess I'll figure things out.
