Any former WoW players out there?

I have never seen an MMORPG that wasn't a grind fest. WOW being the worst offender.

This is why I love Guild Wars. With low level caps, and limited skills to carry, the game is much more about strategy and team and skill builds than equip and level.

But does it let you look...magnificent?

The map on the wall looks like Lord of the Rings, so I would guess Lord of the Rings Online.

And that fellow looks magnificent indeed!

To add to the conversation, I would say EVE Online is the best MMO out there. Except that it is the worst one to play as a game... It has the best world. Everyone plays on the same "shard" so if you've read or heard about someone or something, it has happened somewhere in the universe and you can meet them. The economy is virtually entirely player-driven. This allows for some amazing opportunities to make enormous amounts of wealth in-game. The lawless parts of space away from the AI controlled empires are completely open ended allowing the playerbase to police themselves for better or for worse. EVE Online is a Libertarian paradise, and it can be absolute HELL!

All that good, however, comes with enormous amounts of time sinks. If I had no life, I would probably be playing it non-stop.

It does indeed seem to have very nice costumes, from the little I played of Guild Wars (my roommate got bored of it after a week and I didn't want to play by myself, and for some reason NONE of my other friends have the Nightfall expansion!), the costumes while decent weren't really that customizable.

I want an RPG mmo (rather than the mmorpg which aren't terribly rpg like) set in a time when you can dress up in whatever you want, and each piece will add protection bonuses that accurately reflect its design, rather than simply being a higher level of armour. That way, you can still look snazzy if you want, or dress up in a particular style if you wish, without having to worry too much about not having the best gear (though of course if you dress up super fancy and then go off adventuring your chance of survival compared to someone who is dressed in preparation is more believably small).

It's funny then how pretty much everyone who I ever played wow with has had all 3 of those, if they haven't had a full time job then they've been a full time student. I've heard many stories of couples meeting through WoW, one of them is even in my current guild.
Oh there are exceptions, although I haven't seen anyone with all three being FULL TIME, one of my roommate's has a girlfriend he lives with, full time job and still plays WoW, though his WoW play time is more like part-time than full time.

It's LotRo, as answered.

It's why I like the LotRo system (dunno about other MMO's) of having primary and secondary costumes. You'll always have the armour bonus' of your primary costume, so feel free to seek out the best armour, but can set it so you're seen in your secondary costume. Hence why I can afford to look like the elf above and not be slaughtered as I'm questing in Moria.

I would like to see this system in all RPG's - dammit I don't want to pick an outfit based on practicality, I want to pick one based on the awesomeness of my hat!

I almost got LotR online back when it came out. Seems appealing... um... Nooooooooo!

It's very fun, very pretty and does a decent job of sticking to the lore...mostly. For all intents and purposes it's a direct WoW-clone.

Shamus of DM of the Rings has been doing a Let's Play of the game, starting here. It's mostly ripping the piss out of the silliness of it all, and it's pretty accurate. Not sure if that works as an advertisement for the game :p

I prefer City of Heroes method. Have 4-5 costumes that look however you want, irrespective of what "gear" you've got. And then throw in a hugely detailed and varied costume creator with millions of possible combinations :goodjob:

As to LotRO, well, as Kan' said, it is just another EQ/WoW* clone, albeit a well made one. If you're still after that kind of gameplay, go for it as it's one of the best examples out there. If you want something even remotely inventive, look elsewhere.

*as I said earlier in this thread, pretty much everything in WoW is copied straight out of EQ, so all the "WoW clones" should really be "EQ clones" :p

Just wait until they release the Incarna expansion for Eve Online
