Any modern ships should be able to carry cruise missiles; and cruise missiles should probably have somewhat stronger bombard (and retain lethality.) Finally, make both cruise missiles and marines airliftable to carriers (for transfer to battleships or transports), and carriers capable of holding one unit of footsoldiers.
I think changes like that would make modern naval task forces a bit more authentic, as roving bases of operation and supply on the seas.
Far from it. It would be implying that battleships are useless, a view obviously shared by the government, as the last battleship was decommissioned in 1991(2?). I am a very strong proponent of the navy, as well as the Marines (note: only the Marines are guaranteed their existence by the Constitution -- the other branches can be disbanded at the whim of the government). However, I believe that since 1942, the navy has been built around providing forward and mobile air bases to project power around the globe (w/ the exception of SSBNs). Unarguably, the game does a poor job with depicting that aspect of "naval" warfare. Unfortunately, with increasing satellite coverage and more accurate missiles, I truly believe that surface navies will become obsolete before 2050. The solution will be extreme long range aircraft...
Leathernecks have long been viewed as the best (large scale, in terms of numbers -- i.e., many more marines than seals) group of soldiers in the world...
Trivia to the Future Marine: where does the term "Jarhead" come from?
