In CivDOS. I know it can result in conflict in "Win Civ", but I can't remember ever having seen a war started because I demanded tribute. They simply refuse in my experience. Is there ever a reason not to demand tribute? Does it worsen your relations in any way or something?

It's pretty much the only reason to even enter "negotiations" pre-Republic, IMO. At least you may come away with a little extra cash before crushing them.

You are often very likely to start a war by demanding tribute.

Generally you will only receive tribute if you are powerful, but not TOO powerful, and it is relatively early in the game. Otherwise they will either ignore your request, or get all mad n stuff and declare war.

It all depends. When I've taken every city of a nation, and there's only one or two left, they pay a tribute gladly... xD

Before asking for tribute, it is important to have an idea about the size of the other civ's treasury. If you established an embassy in a city belonging to that particular civilization, you can check the report from your "intelligence advisor". It is stupid to ask for tribute when the other civilization's treasury is too small (50 "coins" is the minimum). Yes, it can trigger war, at least in version 474.03. It happened to me more than once.

It usually happened to me to, wars starting with the demands. I usually make sure to have a pretty large military and ready to start a war. If you have enough military surrounding various enemy cities, they sometimes give into your demands for fear of being crushed. Usually though, it means war.

I have the experience if the leader you talk to demand you first for something, Knowlegde/Money or attack this enemies etc, then they have NEVER given me any money, so I stopped even to ask those.
Else it is very seldom they give money and I only get money when I don't need them, like when I'm stronger than the enemy, to ask a stronger enemy for money = war.

I usually do not ask due to the risk but I will if I feel that they will cave in. Getting all the gold and knowledge of a small civ can sometimes help with the smaller techs that are not on my chosen tech trail...like picking up chivalry which can be handy.
