Any rumors on expansion yet?

Expansion could have new game mechanics, and new alternate leaders with alternate UA's for current civs. And hopefully not include the already released DLC civs in an expansion, that's just spitting in the eye of loyal, paying customers. Now an ultimate edition eventually, sure, they'll add DLC for that, + expansions (if they ever make any).

Obviously, with a game basically broken at release...

How was Civ4 on release? I'm genuinely interested because I didn't start playing until later.

Definitely agreed that few notable games have had a buggier release than Civ5.

Moderator Action: Let's not derail the thread in that direction, please.

I think they should include all DLC released so far in the expansion, and give a discount when buying the expansion for those who already have the DLC.

That'd be ok too. Would need to be a sizable discount tho considering how much I've payed in DLC! Then they'd have to work out a system to scale the discount based on what you've gotten.. yeah, I don't see them doing that.

I can see a gold edition with everything released up to that point included bundled with features, and that might be the only way for them to release a feature based expansion.

It's just a lot easier to sell people on the idea of DLCs if it's a unit, a building or a civ. It's something almost tangible you could touch. It's much harder to sell people on an idea or a feature that may be working in the background.

Could you sell people on say an improved online experience (like they did to us with Civ3 PTW ?) moddability, a new gameplay feature, tweaked AI?

Hard to see that in retail or DLC, but easier to do in retail if you give it a fancy name, slap some obvious content on it and list all the stuff the fans will care about as bulletpoints in a press release.

Gold disks are inevitable in the games later stages. Good call.

I'm thinking they are doing many small DLCs instead of the 2 expansion packs that Civ 4 and Civ 3 had.

But I wouldn't be surprised to later see some large bundle DLC deal around the one year anniversary of civ 5.

I am pretty sure that they will create at least one big expansion, two is more questionable. To not release one expansion would be stupid as it would sell pretty well. And sure a second expansion would also prob sell pretty well but I dont think that they have enough content when they already have released a lot of DLCs. And I dont expect civ 5 to have as long life time as civ 4.

Because all those were included in vanilla from the beginning...

I believe what this chap is saying is that all of the DLC content for CiV was coded prior to the game's release and was effectively a 0-day release that was staggered over a period of months. In other words, Take2 could have included it in the initial game release, but chose to keep stuff out to make more money. I would agree with the notion that there doesn't seem to have been much content development after release, and that we would normally have had word of an expansion by now.

Based on everything we've heard, it seems clear that's not the case. There hasn't been any information to suggest it is. I too could make up something and then get upset by it, but it doesn't make it true.

I really hope they do put out an expansion pack like bts, I find it absolutely insane that people are willing to pay for these DLC'S!!! Thay are so expensive for the content, even when they go on sale... A decent expansion for around $20-30 with the current DLC included would be reasonable IMO.

Cash cows... Remember ? :p Few people prefer to boycott, the rest try to adjust themselves with the new systems introduced (like DLC).

well i for one wont be screwed outta my limited and hard earned cash, which is why i've yet to buy any dlc, and if the trend contiunes wont be buying the next civ im sad to say.. I truly think its almost an insult to the buyer... Ahh of course if money wasn't so tight I may consider, but even then I would likely still pass

hehe the only topic that has arose for me today is this DLC stuff!! :deadhorse:

That's also why there's a mod browser in the game!
If they really wanted us to only buy (micro) expansion packs than they wouldn't have added the mod browser ;)
There are plenty of good civs and scenarios to be found there :)

Besides, wait for a sale and you can get it for 50% or 66% off :)
(Also you've added all the seperate prices instead of the packs (Denmark+Explorers, Korea+WOTAW, Cradle of Civ), also nobody would buy the latter, the true price of all serious DLC together is about $30, basically the content and the price of a 'normal' expanion pack (and $10-$15 in sale)).

Oh, and your exclamation mark-key is stuck ;)

You're saying we shouldn't buy expansion packs in a topic about expansion packs, you're talking to the wrong crowd :p

Besides, it's my/our choice to buy (micro) expansion packs. You're free to not do so, but don't tell other people what to do.
I'm not telling you that you must buy expanion packs, am I?
(Not meaning to make this personal, but just making a point :) )

$30 is a lot for me to spend at one time. At least with DLC I can pace myself. I think this is a to each his own type situation, but I'd rather pay $5 every three months than $35 all at once.

i seem to always have the problem that Polynesia's UA doesn't work. I can't send people across the ocean to steal land from other Civs. :(
No need to worry. You can still make faraway great friends who can become your trade partners & meeting more civs early also mean that you'll get more RAs. Also try playing on Terra Maps and soon you'll learn how to use their UA. :)

IMO the content that has been released so far is not in favor of the consumer, it is all about making $5 a pop off single civs at a time. Now im no civ expert but it seems to me like bts for civ4 was a good deal...

hehe it seems I was just a little aggitated last night hence the expressive grammar:D

And a valid point it is, however what I meant was by going along with the new DLC strategy we are as gamers effectively enabling the dev's to sell us short on additional content and to economically exploit us. ( and nope nothing personal at all just intelligent conversation):goodjob:

I've never heard of that issue. Have you tried reinstalling?

I just tried using them and I could embark instantly.
