EDIT: The problem with those suggestions, wyte, is that they are all seen as more or less "evil" (Japan as the exception), which would not be fair to those particular civs

I like the intro biographies- but do agree that they should have phrased it "This nation was great. The leader accomplished this great feat/s, changing the world forever. Well, are you good enough, punk? Can you do better? WELL LET'S SEE YOU TRY, COCKROACH!"... or something to that effect. Probably a little less aggressive.

One thing I'd like, instead of seeing the text and a big picture of your leader, is a map in the background showing the expansion of your civilization over time- so as the Romans, you could see the expansion from Italy into Sicily and Africa and Spain etc etc etc, like the end-game map in Civ 4.

While I agree the intros don't make a great deal of sense in the context of a civ game, I spend at least a three of four hours on a game of civ and only about 30 seconds listening to the intro, the very first time I start a game.

Annoying though the intros maybe, they're hardly the biggest remaining issues with the game and the annoyance is pretty short-lived every time you play, so, yeah, imo, not a big deal.

It's not a put down. It's just fluff, so why do you care? The AD/BC thing is more worthy of "roleplay complaining" than a talking title card.

Just to be clear: I personally don't consider the title cards to be a major issue. I think they're very poorly written, and I try to ignore them as much as possible because of that.

However: they do have a degree of importance that goes beyond fluff. A good intro should kick-start your imagination and get you into the fantasy of being in control of the civilization, or of being that particular leader. A bad intro doesn't just fail to draw you in - it can push you away. It may be relatively brief, but it's unavoidable - short of diverting your attention from the game entirely. Therefore: not fluff.

I don't share the OP's issue with the specific angle the intros take (you are this leader with former glories, magically starting over) though I will admit that meeting George Washington in some year BC is jarring. And I wouldn't go so far as to say I feel cheated by how bad they are. But it's a fair criticism to make. They stink.

Also, for anyone who reads this and thinks "you're just another Civ5 hater": actually, I'm not anymore. I was, but I decided to give the game another chance after the last big patch, and I like it quite a bit better now. There's a lot yet to be done with it, and these title cards are probably never going to be on a Firaxis to-do list. But they still stink, and should have been better.
