Every game I play, I make a concerted effort to try to get the menagerie, and every game I fail. With the exception of the scenario, have any of you built it? And what is your strategy?

try to get close to jungle areas and try protect jungle area from nonbarbarian AI.Usually by establishing cities or forts. And after priesthood switch to FoL - you're getting tigers...

I actually met all the requirements for the first time ever in a recent game. There was a decent-sized jungle island near my empire with no civs on it, so I was able to bring a hunter in in mid-game and capture all the animals I was missing. Of course, I was playing the Kuriotates, so building it would save me the trouble of building two carnivals...

Actually, you would get carnivals in all of your settlements as well. Good for expanding your culture at least.

It'd also mean all the settlements could work bards for +1gpt too...

In all the years I've played, I've never once legitimately obtained the Menagerie, outside of the scenario for it.

I played about 40 non-scenario games of FFH and got it in my 2nd last one. Malakim on large Erebus map. Bear and lions were easily obtained and wolves and tigers were plentiful on continent south of me (I was on NW corner). There was a large patch of jungle on a north-south neck between mountain ranges dividing the Illians and Svaltafar. I kept hawks patrolling this area and was seeing gorillas and luckily Acheron settled in thrle city at the opening of the neck, so I thought the gorilla was safe until i could get my hunter there. the illians then plopped down a terrible city on the jungle. Fast forward a couple hundred turns I got the hunter event and took the gorilla. So have not done it without events, and should point out this was also on wildlands setting (but I think with the sheer volume of animals I saw I still would have gotten them even at normal frequency).

I get it often enough: every 10games or so : 1 out of 2-3 of the games I try to get it. most of the times I don't try so I don't get it.

the main issue is that you have to focus on it early and you cannot expect to get it by chance.. unless very lucky.

gorilla are the harder to get : they disapear early due to jungle being barb-orc-friendly + generaly in the middle of multiple civs.

then lions as deserts are also mostly in the middle.

then wolves and bears : but those are often found late due to living in harsh country.

tigers can be caught early ... or late with FoL.

you have to work for it I said :
you have to get AH early for subdue animal ; and build 2-3 early scouts instead of only warriors, and then hunting quite quickly.
hunting because scouts will often not survive the onslaught of wolfriders, lizardmen, giant spiders... etc long enough to get those 4 animals (not counting tiger).

so you have to have AH + Hunting quick.
if you go the often used agri+ calendar + mining+ BW + ancient chants + myst ...Etc and go "quickly" toward a arsito-agrarianism tech focus, you'll moslty have AH and hunting too late for the menagerie.
most animals will have disappeared.

you don't NEED hunting as a second tech, but you'll need it much earlier than what is often found.

I got it recently. Was playing as the Lizardmen in Orbis. It is probably a lot easier to get it in that mod-mod than most b/c Orbis upgrades animals as it goes along, rather than replace them w/ barbarians.

If you're playing w/ a mod-mod that has "peace w/ animals" then it can become easier as the peace w/ animals AIs will generally leave animals alone so you can go pouching in their land.
