In an IDE.
I ordered it tonight(the laptop) and it's got a 1280x800 wxga screen. I know keepres=1 can get civ to run at your desktop resolution but how well does civ handle the odd dimension?

I recently tried keepres with my PC at 1152x864. No problems. Civ3 simply continues to draw each map tile the same way. End result: a higher resolution simply lets you see more of the map, and the onscreen controls such as the world map and status board in the bottom right are smaller. The game engine seems to respond effortlessly to resolution changes.

my dell has a 1280x800 screen
without the keepres option it sort of stretches. looks ok but not great
but with that option it looks great. Let me see if I can do a screen shot

edit:
the title screen doesn't stretch, but I seem to remember it stretching without the keepres option

game play. notice it isn't distorted. without the keepres option it would fill the whole screen(no black bars) but be slightly distorted

going to try to get a pic of game play that is small enough file size wise to not get shrunk by photobucket There we go, had to scroll down so that more of the unexplored area was showing

Cool. That does it, I'm hooking my PC up to my widescreen HDTV. (1280x720 DLP 46" w/DVI and VGA inputs as well as Svideo). Maybe I'll run to my local 24-hour *-Mart and get a wireless kb/mouse combo and play from the couch.

By the way, you don't have to use photobucket to post screenshots for using here; they have an FTP server just for that...click the "upload" link at the bottom of the page.

In your Civ3/PTW/Conquests directory there will be a civilization3/ptw/conquests.ini file, depending on your version. Double click this file and it will open in notepad. If there's a KeepRes option, change the value from '0' to '1'. If there isn't, just add it.

Well, yeah, I run it at 1280x1024 on my desktop with keepres=1 on all the time. I was just wondering if it would have problems with a ratio that wasn't 4:3 or 5:4, and apparently it doesn't. So I'm good to go  .

EDIT: Whoa, when'd we get a new :thumbsup smiley?

i play civ on a 1440 * 900. i had to adjust this with res. hacker civ3. but this is for mac.
anyway, it looks great.

i've only ever played civ on my widescreen laptop- i installed it on my mom's computer over christmas and man did it look funny in the small screen. of course the fact that i haven't seen a 15 incher in quite a while may have had something to do with it...

Okay, I got my wireless mouse & kb, moved my PC to my HDTV and it booted up in 1280x720, the native DLP resolution. So far, so good. I edit the .ini's for Conquests and PTW to add KeepRes=1. Start Conquests, get the splash screen...splash goes away...waiting...um..... Try again, same thing. I get the splash screen over the desktop, a CD read and then the program exits with no error messages or logs that I can find.

I took KeepRes back out and same thing. I changed to 800x600, same thing. Same with PTW. I'm a very computer savvy person, so I have no fears of editing .ini's.

Any ideas?

I guess I'll have to move the PC back, hook it up to the old monitor and see what happens.

By the way,SMAC crashed on launch, with an illegal access error. Warcraft III demo ran fine.

My games are bought and legal with all patches.

EDIT: My only available video modes for the DLP are 1280x720 and 800x600. SMAC worked fine under 800x600, but I don't think CivIII works under 1024x768. I wonder if the lack of 1024x768 is causing startup probs w/CivIII.

EDIT 2: Instead of moving the PC again I brought a monitor over so everything's the same except the monitor. Conquests starts fine. I guess something about not having 1024x768 available or 720 being less than 768 is causing a problem.
