I went through the original Civ, then Civ II, and then the competing brand of Civilizarion Call to Power. Then finally Civ III. That's where I stopped. Havent tried the others, Love Civ III, partly because I enjoy dong mods. ALSO, I can play it on all kinds of computers and I dont need a dedicated gaming computer with special graphics cards like I assume Civ IV and Civ V need.

Having said that....I am having a terrible time lately with Vista fighting me on the graphics issue when doing mods and creating scenarios: the revised units_32.pcx file not showing up in the editor, sometimes the icon graphics not showing up in the Civilopedia when testing it out in the game.

I'm using Civ III Conquests in Vista. Never had this problem in Windows ME, and dident USED to have it in Vista. Just lately. Anyone else have this problem?

I've never upgraded to Vista, it looks like it was designed by Microsoft with the sole purpose of complicating users' lives unless they're that kinds of user who only uses Internet explorer, Skype and MSN Messenger. :vomit:

That's what I'm starting to think. It seems like typical Microsoft approach to things: "You low-life swine are too dumb to know what you're doing, so we're going to do all of your thinking for you. Just bear with us while we try to figure out what WE'RE doing!!"

I don't play civ3 anymore, but it's quite possible that I will pick it up again in the future. Sometimes I suffer from nostalgia and get this urgent need to play old computer games I used to play when I was younger. Games like Doom, Quake or Civ never goes out of style, no matter how old they are. :)

As a "power user" using Windows 7 at work, I've found that there are certain things where you just have to "let go" and "go with the flow". Once you get to that point, it works fairly well, even if you're using dirty-hippie programs like Eclipse, Firefox (3.6 yet ... I'm a snob), and Miranda IM.

I own Civ 3 Complete, Civ 4 Complete, and Civ 5. I play all of them, but not that much, other than Civ 3. And yes, loads of people still play it. Just look at the S&T forum. It is the best of the series. If they were to implement a 10-year anniversary expansion, what would it be?

I got a new computer a short while ago with Windows 7. I'm not a big fan of it. None of my older games work except Civ 3.

I'm surprised you were able to even get Civ 3 working! When I "upgraded" to Win 7, Civ 3 was the most sluggish and impossible to play game ever. After a year of Win 7, being able to play Civ 3 was one of the core reasons I downgraded.

Only Vanilla would load. I have Civ 3 Gold and it wouldn't even come up.

Still playing Civ3Conquests. The rest are a bit too "Cartoonish/PixelAntimation"
I may try 4 in the future, but for now I like 3.

Microsoft and the various Windows programs are what is known as a "protection racket". A cyberspace version of Al Capone.

I recently bought a new laptop which came with Windows Vista. I have had no problems running Civ III. I also have Civ IV and Civ V. Overall, I don't like them. They have certain features which I wish Civ III had but the whole graphic presentation seems overdone and clunky. The units are overpowering. They seem out of scale as if they were all transformer size or bigger. I'll stick with Civ III.

ill start playing again once somebody answers my thread but i still love the game

I haven't actually played any Civ games for several months. One of those "burn-out" periods. I figure I'll probably pick Civ3 and Civ4 up again at some point, but I'm not ready to yet. I'll vote in a few months.

I used to be heavily against Civ4 but it improved a lot between 1.00 and BTS 3.23, such that I actually enjoy it now (when I'm not burnt out). I've only played the demo of Civ5, and don't plan to buy it until at least the second expansion.

I don't play Civ3 online though. Recently I've been played it in LANs on New Years, but that's it for multiplayer. Although we never finish those games.

Did you install it somewhere under C:\Program Files, or C:\Program Files (x86)? Vista (and 7) have some wonky "protection" thing for those folders (as well as some others such as C:\Windows) that can cause files there to be annoyingly well hidden. I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling in C:\Civilization III or something else directly off of C:, and hopefully that'll solve the files not showing up problem. It may well not solve all the Vista issues, but... that's Vista.

I had all sorts of problems on Vista, some of which were particular to Civ3, so I went back to XP, where I am today. Using 7 at work hasn't been as bad as using Vista at home, but I do different things at work than at home, too. I figure I'll save myself some headaches and stick with XP for at least another two and a half years.

You know what, Quin, when you get back into Civ3, maybe you could ge back to that one story of yours, you know, the one you wrote based on that Mod you made?
