Is it any good? I have Age of Empires: Rise of Rome and I like it a lot. I was never really into the American Revolution that much in history class (bad teacher, never my fault) so I never really bothered to look into this game but I heard it is very good. Has anyone else here played it and liked it?

Yup.

The game is definitely not as good as the first two. Why? I'm not really sure, but the graphics have alot to do with it. The graphics are good, too good. It doesn't have the same feel as the other two did, which was fun, simple, addictive play. Things are also more complicated with the card deck system.

If you've only played AOE: Rise of Rome and are interested in playing another Age of Empires, buy Age of Empires II: Age of Kings and the expansion pack, The Conquerers. AOE II is a masterpiece. I believe they've re-released it and it still has a very active online community.

Buy AOE II, not AOE III.

Played it and enjoyed it. I prefer it over the other AOE's

Only problem I have is its a bit easy to beat, you simply block out all your lands with walls so none can get through, have towers and catapults and they will easily kill the attackers while you sit back and gather all your resources for a huge attack when they have used theres trying to get past your walls.
This is on the higher levels to.
But overall a good game that I would recommend.

I agree with Capulet. But if you like AOE, you should get it. And the campaigns are pretty cool.

I liked AOE III, but I don't play it anymore. Boring. I like the idea of having guns and shooting the enemy, but no, I just got bored of it.

I think you're talking about Age of Mythology? Age of Empires 3 takes place in the so called "colonial era," no catapults, just cannons.

If I had to rate the AoE games, it's probably go:
1.) Age of Mythology: The Titans
2.) Age of Empires II: The Conquerors
3.) Age of Empires III
4.) Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome

I have a feeling that the upcoming AoE3 expansion will make AoE3 more fun to play. The biggest issue I had with AoE3, is the civilizations didn't vary that much. Honestly, there are far fewer units than in Age of Mythology, maybe even Age of Kings. The expansion will give us a Native American civ to play as, so it will add a lot more variety as far as civ-choices go.

I'd wait for the expansion and then ask again.

I loved AOM. It is one of the few games I haven't ebayed away (yes I ebayed Warcraft 3).

One question I have is that for common units, are they at least reskinned to have their respective country's uniform.

That's my strategy in AOEII and AOM. After a couple of horus the enemy is reduced to using cheap units and sends in it's peasents for the resources I have walled off :king:

That buggd me in AOEII

I played it (the demo), and didn't like it very much. AoE II was much better, although it had a poor AI. (Build 2 gaurd towers next to the AI, and they just crumble... or, use your scout to attack their workers early, and they just give up.

chieftess, a friend of mine scripted his own AI to play like he plays, more or less. if you played online you may have heard of Blood League a few years ago, with Hawm Quinzy, D Destructor etc.. it was our special online ranking system developed by a friend who scripted varying degrees of difficult AI, which became very very common and i think its still used now even. The one who scripted it changed his name several times, but i think at that time it was either i-oblitorate-all or FF-Freak. this was all for Conquerors btw.. ah, nostalgia...

I like Age of Empires I and II better, but I love seeing my army of Imperial Redcoats thrash through Isabella.

Can someone who played this game answer this question. I know. It seems like a very insignificant thing but I like the idea of French and Ottoman soldiers to look different.

I have both AOE3 and AOE2 (plus the expansion) and of the 2 I play AOE2 way more. I don't know why, but AOE3 just doesn't have the same "feel" to it. But then again I am a die-hard fan of AOE2 - I have played it online for about 4 years now...

As far as I can tell, no:

However, to be fair, each civilization has a wide range of unique units. Usually three or more. For instance, the Ottoman's can't actually build Musketeers or Crossbowman (shown top and bottom, respectively). And one of their UUs, the janissary, obviously looks different.

Also, there are many Native American tribes, and when you "control" each tribe, you get to build units (that's plural) from that tribe. All of them are unique per tribe, and we're talking tons of tribes. Over a dozen, I'd say.

I still prefer AOE : Rise of rome, to all it's follow ups. None of the sequels captures the sheer playability of the first one. Not even AOE II.

However, I would have liked to have seen some of the features they had in Age of Kinds put into Age of Empires (such as gates, formations, postures & advanced orders. But the game engine of AOE is so much better!
