Since all you samurai masters are hanging about this thread, let me ask you a question. I've been using this unit as "Ronin," a hidden nationality UU for Japan. It's supposed to be a mercenary samurai, which I suppose ronin to be (from the DeNiro movie). With all the new anims from PTW, what would be the best anim for my "Ronin" unit??

EDIT: If anyone reading this is knowledgable about Windows 98, please go to this thread and help me out here. Thanks.

Samurai were not mercenaries. They were bound to their Daiymo through strong ties of honour. If their master died, they either committed seppuku (honourable hari-kari) or became ronin.

In essence? Mercenaries are soldiers whose services go to the highest bidder, and who have no vested interest in the conflict. I hardly see how that can apply to samurai honour-bound in fealty to their lord.

You guys should keep debating...you're neck and neck on the post counts. :D

I didn't know there were women samurai! I wish someone would make a female samurai unit. In fact, I wish there were more female units period.

Anyway, a google search reveals that ronin were often vagrant, troublesome, rebellious and formed outlaw bands, so that works for me as a hidden nationality unit.

Sorry Zulu but if you do alittle research you'll find that Samurai almost never acted with the noble ideas of "honor" in mind. Most Samurai acted with the same self serving attidutes of European knights. The myth around Samurai began in the modern era when Imperialistic Japan conviced its population that they should act in the same noble tradition and do things like the Kamikazi pilots. So basicaly it is a bunch of fascistic propoganda.

But...
The ruling class (The samurai) made rules what is honorable and what isn't.
This is very truthful tradition but it's meaning was to serve the rights of samurai in the first place. Samurai could in the end do almost anything they wanted.
Cutting the head of peasant wasn't big deal example...however cutting the head of another samurai WAS big deal.

And as described by Zulu Ronin were those who had didn't have master...there were periods that samurai could be described as "mercenaries", travelling the land and trying to find income...just watch "The Seven Samurai"...where are they lords? They don't have one...so they all are ronins.
However the idea of calling some who doesn't have lord "dishonorable" was to make people obedient to lord they served...Samurais whole existence was serve their lord.

Ninjas have their own chapter especially what comes to their "honor"...

still doesn't change the fact that they weren't mercenaries :p

An Excellent alternative to the Civ3 and PTW's Samurai Warrior :).

I like this unit very much indeed. I believe it suits me quite well.

Please excuse this interuption from a first timer and new to civ3, but the very word Samurai means "to serve".
The leaderless ex Samurai were the Ronin and outcasts among the civilised society of Nihhon.
