Apolyton civ site

Two of Apolyton's historical strengths, relative to Civfanatics, have been multiplayer and SMAC/SMAC-X communities.
Apolyton was already a large community back when Civfanatics was just a couple dozen gamers.

If this is considered trolling, then I'm apologizing right away for it.
I gave Apolyton a visit recently, and, well, it's appearing to me that this site is slowly dieing away before our eyes. Aren't there more of approximately one hundred posters even still active? :(

Forum activity is certainly a key indicator of a website's health; in terms of active users, I take it you're going by the 'Currently Active Users' indicator. That's a snapshot of activity in the immediate moments prior to your visit, not for e.g. an entire day. Another site health indicator is in-house content: we have three ongoing Civ podcasts with one in its third, second and first seasons respectively.

Apolyton is not dying. It is not thriving as it once did, no, but by no means has it met its death knell.

It's a crap site for anything to do with CIV Dan, all those pod casts are, are the ramblings of unskilled players. It's just a generic OTF now.

Your assessment is incorrect on all accounts, and contributes nothing constructive. :shake: Such opinions are best kept to yourself.

I've only listened to one, but the podcast I listened to was good (#50 IIRC). A bit excessive irrelevant chatter, but good on the whole. I'd consider listening to one again - I haven't more out of the fact that I never listen to any podcasts (I've never listened to any others than that one Apolyton one) than anything.

The thing that makes CFC the better option for me is the much more lively Civ3 forums. I'm not sure quite why the Civ3 forums have so little activity at Apolyton - Civ2 has more activity there. It's the opposite of here. And as a Civ3 player, that makes it an easy choice which one to frequent. There's probably a 75:1 ratio of CFC Civ3 posts to Apolyton Civ3 ones with all the CFC Civ3 forums considered.

But Apolyton looks more polished with the recent VBulletin version. There's just not a whole lot for a Civ3-philiac to post on there. And I'm not really sure how the situation could be rectified other than poaching a decent number of prominent CFC'ers, or coming up with some popular new feature that would draw visitors at regular intervals, similar to what the GOTM's do here.

Or, I suppose, the two sites could always merge on April Fool's Day and form CivJunction again.

Hey, at least I try to keep the demogames running over there...
Yes, I have observed your ongoing contributions to the Poly Civ4 BtS Democracy Game. That is a constructive effort.

I believe you are correct on which episode that was.

Fair enough. :)

On behalf of the Apolyton CS staff and administration, thank you kindly. Much of that credit goes to Gramphos but also Locutus, Solver and snoopy369.

Server busy messages are annoying.
I concur. We are continuing to work to address the underlying issue behind their frequency (and in general).

Congrats on the upgrade, Dan!
Thanks, TF. :)

(Pardon the delayed acknowledgment here! :o)

Took you long enough! :)
It was far from planned or intentional how long this upgrade took.

Part of the delay was the number of customized modifications to our forum setup over the years. They added or expanded onto features that were not native to vBulletin version 2.x, or otherwise available from the forum's community at the time they were implemented. They had to either be phased out in our copy of 3.x, because e.g. 3.x had the capability, or integrated within because 3.x still did/does not provide the feature that we had (or at least to the same extent).

Combine this with our limited staff numbers and time availability, and the end result was a prolonged upgrade period behind the scenes.

i love their podcasts - although there is a bit of irrelevant talk, it adds humor to the podcast so it's not boring to listen to

and on the topic, idk, really - i just joined both Apolyton and CivFanatics within the past week. Apolyton seems fine to me, though, and so is CivFanatics :)
