Tested. Gaesatae's ability fully not work against archers, whether aggressively or defensively.
On the topic of gaesatae, anyone know what this is about?
just hover the mouse over the unit icon in the bottom right when the unit is selected and it shows all the unit abilitiesWhere did you find that? I wonder if this could be related to the upcoming heroes mode?
Crossbowmen do a lot of damage to Gaesatae, but they don't one-shot them like they do Warriors, so I'm guessing that the +10 strength is activated.I'd be more curious how it works with Crossbowmen though since those definitely do have higher base CS (30), but I'm not sure if that actually counts or not when it's shooting at a Gaesatae since it's still a ranged attack and not an actual fight. I'm sure it'll work if the Gaesatae attacks it melee though
I'm not seeing that in my game. Do you have any modes or mods enabled? On the topic of gaesatae, anyone know what this is about?
Never fear,I thought it would at least have triggered on defense. Oh well..
Yeah it seems to be the war and thunder extra unique units mod. Which was enabled even if I don't play with it, intended to use it for compatibility work on a mod of my own. Haven't played the game in many months so I forgot about it.I'm not seeing that in my game. Do you have any modes or mods enabled?
Cool, well then everything is definitely working as intendedNever fear,
Debunked at least with firetuner

Ahh yes, there are other cases where combat strength is used like targeting, or sea dog capture that use the combat not the ranged ability but not everything.I originally thought it would be the case, because it would have followed the damage calculation logic.
That was what I assumed as well. Like I said above, it seems like Archers are a bit of an Achilles' heal of Gaesetae. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, it makes them more balanced than I initially thought. On the other hand, it is not triggered on defense versus an Archer which has lower melee combat strength (15CS vs 20CS).
However, it is the higher 25 ranged CS that is used for the damage calculation, but that higher attack (25CS vs 20CS) does not trigger the +10CS bonus of the Gaesatae.

To me, not being able to build warriors is the Achilles heel. The higher cost of UU is also annoying like all other UU out there. Now targeting uses modified rather than base that advantage is gone but weirdly in all 3 of my games my lone Gaesatae survived to musket probably because there always seemed to be iron around.Archers are a bit of an Achilles' heal of Gaesetae.
