Archers

It does. Cavs also have ZoC. However, I can't remember a Knight using it zone of control!! Anybody knows wether this is bad memory or knights actually lack of ZoC??

Thanks to a nice CFC tip, I tried a different strategy on Emporer level using Japan.

Build order:
Warrior, Warrior, Settler, Barracks, Archer*5

Second town:
Warrior, Spearmen, Temple, Spearmen

Research: Warrior Code (traded for Bronze Working)

I took those 5 archers and spearman to my neighbour and took 2 towns. My attack stalled when I reached their capital (it was well defended). So, I sued for peace and got 3 techs for it.

I kept pumping out archers and sent 8 next time with a couple spearmen. I took 1 more town and then their capital and sued for peace again (their bowmen were starting to cut down my archers), netting another 3 techs. I even got the Oracle this way. Mopping up their cities later was merely academic.

If you want to use Archers, it must be right away. I used to wait for horsemen to make my early attack and build many settlers. However, the AI was always almost at Pikemen before I had a sizeable army. Using the archers, the AI makes the cities for you and all you have to do is conquer.

i have seen units move parallel to a knight and no ZOC but it could just be me halucinating again...

but archers are worth it.. if i am playing on a large amount of land map i usually try to swamp all nearby enemys in them and force them into submissivness early on then expand while they are despratly trying to survive against my army

The Bab Bowmen means that the Babylonians, despite their peaceful traits, are pretty good for an early war. I've crushed Germany with 'em. I only got Iron and Horses at the very end of the war so practically all the fighting was done with Bowmen vs German Archers and Spearmen.
