Are armies realy worth it or not? or is it better to just use one for the hero epic, or rather the one that lets you build them, and save your leaders for rushing wonders.

And are armies even needed? is there any realy advanatage to using them?

Great Leaders make those decisions when fate is upon them.

Some situations call for military leaders (especially in ancient times), and others call for civic leaders (in more modern times).

I have mixed feelings on armies. They would probably be more popular if we could move units in and out of them. That would make them far more valuable. They are useful for taking out strong positions in the late game, and the AI seems to stop dead in its tracks when it sees one. But with the current rules about armies, I don't like them very much.

I ran up against an AI army in my current game. It had three knight units in it, and I destroyed it with one veteran cavalry unit.

One last thing, an army seems to heal one unit at a time, so if you have three units in it you can wait three turns to heal. Not so good.

One army is a pain in the butt, but I always make an army out of my first great leader. One win later and you build the heroic epic and great leaders come much easier after that. Then build the military academy when you get the right advance and start cranking out armies. There is a period in the middle of the game where you top cites have no more improvments to make so I have one just crank out armies. You will get the pentagon to build after a few of them, but I dont put any units in them until I get modern armor. Usually by that time I have a large number of tanks to upgrade and I will have up to 10 armies ready to be filled. Ten armies with four modern armor each will slice through just about anything.

Bottom line: Civ III does NOT give great leaders enough influence regarding combat.

I find an army of any level can open a city when the last stalwart defender refuses to die. They do take longer to heal, but not tht long. Ten armies of modern armor sounds awesome. Have to try that, if I can get a game to run that long again. :)

Ramses just cleaned up the Chinese Empire. Couldn't have done it without him (Chinese had a couple "Killer Riflemen," if you know what I mean). Ramses' reputation will live forever!

Armies are really cool--if they're the AI's armies. They just scream out "hit me with artillery". For us, though, armies are only good for Heroic Epic. Unfortunately :(
