Are barbs more powerful with the patch?

In marathon speed games they don't seem to have slowed the rate at which barbarians appear from epic, with the result they appear in vast numbers. I don't think there's any noticeable difference on the other speeds, but in a normal marathon game the barbs are about three times as bad as the raging setting on any other speed.

Yes I was playing a marathon game and it was only pure luck that the barbs didn't kill me. It takes forever to build units initially and the barbs could have destroyed me at will, but for some reason they didn't

If you want barb's to appear less in Marathon games, edit this line in gamespeedinfo.xml :-
<iBarbPercent></iBarbPercent>

The higher it is, the less likely barbarians are to appear.

I can't remember the default, but I imagine it should be 300 in align with all other marathon modes, which means hypothetically barbarians shouldn't appear anymore in bulk than any other game, unless of course they left it at 100 which would be suicidal :D.

Well the barbarian percentage seems to be set to 300 for marathon mode, so it's scaled correctly from normal. I think the problem may be that they don't simply increase in number linearly with the slower maps, due to the fact expansion is so slow. While they may only appear at one third of the rate, they have far more map to appear in, which I think may be the source of the problem. The changed setting only allows for the increased number of turns.

Just turn off barbarians :)

I'm playing a huge map at normal speed, its 125 AD, I have 5 cities, and I've been getting an average of 2 barbs per turn for the past 20 turns - one of which is usually an axeman. It's getting annoying. If I wanted to have to kill something every turn I'd declare war on someone.

It sounds like you have a Barb village that has established itself near you. Maybe two of them. They will begin to produce a steady stream of attackers unless you overtake the town and turn it into one of your own.

Another tactic I like to use is putting 3 or 4 of my troops on the border with a barb village. The warriors gain experience and promotions, and if I've built my civ properly I gain those cities on a culture flip.
