I was wondering, is it just my imagination or are the maps too big for AI? By that I mean Territory/Empty Space, like. Is it just me or by the end of the game there's just so much space left, like take the largest map (Earth for example), by the time I finished playing one of the games with Satellites I've noticed that there is PLENTY of space left in the world (especially in Russian territories).

I have the same feeling. That's why I often play on smaller maps with an increased number of civs than the standard (e.g.: small map, 9 civs, or something like that).

I only have that feeling if I play on continents plus and pangea plus or other maps where city states aren't on the main island

You proparly are playing on a lower difficulty where the AI expands slow I usally play on king and sometimes emperor if i want a challenge(king fun)

At king the AI expands as fast as you do.

At prince and warlord you can expand the AI verry fast and it will look like the map is enormous because there is still room to settle

I play on king and it doesnt take long for the map to feel a little less "roomy".

Ai seems to want to pack in as many cities as it can in the spave given too. Up the difficulty.

I was going to say that computers are too small for the developers view.

On standard and larger maps I put 2-4 additional civs and keep the same amount of city states or reduce the number by about 2-3, and the map fills quite nicely by the Renaissance. Sometimes there are unclaimed tiles, but usually in beetween other cities, so they can't be settled.

I usually play on standard size maps and I feel the size is okay. The land does take a while to fill in, but by the late game all the land is taken. Maybe some tundra or snow isn't, but everything else is.

I play on emperor/immortal on standard maps and I don't think it's a problem. The AI usually fills up most empty land by Renaissance. There might be some open land, but not enough that it's a problem. If you feel there is too much, play with a high sea level.
