Would closer historical tech advances result
in a more enjoyable game for you.

Eg Spaceship launches in 2000- 2050 compared to 1300-1400 spaceship launches on deity level ?

I think it is important, because that is often how I judge if I am doing well in the game. I like to have whatever unit about 5 turns before it happened in reality. If I find that I am moving too fast or too slow too often, then I modify my civ3mod.bic file.

Can you imagine how hard it would be to program the game so that all techs are discovered at what time they happened in 'real life'? There are so many variables based on how a player plays the game and what terrain they start out with. It is controlled to some extent by having a minimum/maximum # of turns to discover a tech. Perhaps the 4/40 turns should be adjusted?

What are they supposed to do? Oh, it is 1500 A.D. now, all civs must have this particular tech, so you automatically get it regardless of what your infrastructure or cash flow is.

Hey Hi Bamspeedy

I said closer not exact :) Maybe within 200 years of exact time would be good because of all the variables you mentioned :)

From my point of view, civ3 is about possible history. What if Plato had thought that experimental science was the way to go, instead of regarding it as sinful? What if the Church had encouraged Galileo instead of squashing him? Science could have advanced more rapidly (or slowly) if things had been a little different.

But fortunately, civ3 is configurable, so each of us can play the way we like. Have fun.

It is important, not because I am often launching space ships early. Au contraire, I am usually developing pikemen a bit too late. I would like more time in BC to fight wars with spears and elephants. I would like to be able to sail my nuclear submarine to the next continent in something less than 5 years...

No. Timing tech progress to match human history has zero importance. What matters is gameplay. If you play a certain style, on a certain map, tech progresses at a certain rate; with a different style, a different rate.

As someone once said, "if you want realism, go outside" .

my vote is for game play with logical tech progressions. I play with the same settings every game and i'll hit middle ages any where between 500ad and 1500ad. depends on how many techs from goody huts, how many wars, expansion, etc.
