Are there any positive benefits to tourism?

Is tourism only a mechanic to win a cultural victory and force other empires to adopt your ideology or take unahappiness penalties?

Is there any benefit to your empire for high tourism outputs other than a cultural victory?


I ask because every current victory condition helps your empire along the way, giving you progress to the other victory conditions.

It would be odd for tourism to give no benefit, but that is how it works from what I have seen.

We assume that it also helps you acquire policies and ideologies and we know that it can cause unhappiness in other empires and make their cities flip to you somehow, though that latter one isn't necessarily a direct positive benefit to you as it mostly is a problem for the other civs. See all the other threads on that topic...

I've seen this term thrown around a lot, but what does it mean? Do you "flip" them to your ideology or do you "flip" them and take control?

City flipping is from older civs, it means the city joins your civilization peacefully.

Not that I'm aware of. If they have, I would be very interested in hearing how it works, what happens, and how it relates to ideologies/tourism/culture, etc.

I think city flipping is quite overrated, esp when surrounded by stronger enemy culture. If that's the only value in non-cultural games, then it could be mostly ignored except in defensive measures.

City Flipping has only been referenced in several interviews with regards to Ideologies. All we really know about it is that you can flip cities from a civ with a different Ideology when you make the citizens particularly unhappy and the civ either doesn't declare war on you or doesn't switch to your ideology.

And that's been a few months ago. It could be different now, or out completely.

Ok that might have been kind of counter-intuitive, but think of tourism as an extra reward for your civilization.

Your religion, trade routes, culture, great works on their own provide bonuses themselves, but collectively are labelled as "tourism". This is then used to win the cultural victory.

Tourism affects other civilizations by making them weaker by means of happiness, but happiness in turn effects growth, production & military effectiveness, and eventually revolt in your empire. Though you may not notice it directly, you silently overtake your rivals

In a way tourism works a bit like the Maori Warrior unit from the polynesia DLC.

Instead of having a higher combat level, it decreases others, thereby making it stronger.

Tourism decreases the power of others, which in turn makes you (albeit subtly and inadvertently)stronger.

I'm hoping that it benefits peaceful types: I usually don't care how strong enemies are unless they are warmongers.

As far as unhappiness goes, doesn't the AI cheat with that currently?

I play the game at Marathon Mode and Prince difficulty because I don't want to face a cheating AI at higher difficulties.

I typically win Cultural victories simply because I like social policy benefits and thus invest in all of the cultural buildings for every city.


I'm concerned that I will need to abandon what is best for my empire's strength to gain a victory condition/ hamstring someone else.

I tend to think more in terms of growing my own empire than winning the game.

(Well, I also play world police to keep small empires in the game later on: but thats a secondary objective.)

You seem to consider cultural buildings as the strength of your empire. If that is the case, you will not have to change that to pursue a Cultural Victory in BNW. You need to build cultural buildings like museums and amphitheaters in order to house Great Works which will produce Tourism.

Plus, the new Hotel building converts some of the culture from World Wonders into Tourism. So your Cultural Wonders get in on the act too.

And Culture is the defense against other civs' Tourism. You're going to need a lot if you are facing France or Brazil.

To maximize you empires Culture in civ V you
1. build cultural buildings (reduced strength in BNW)
2. get cultural CS allies*side benefit=resources
3. build Wonders*side benefit=wonder effects
4. get Landmarks (From Great Artists G+K, from Archaeologists and digs in BNW)
5. get Great Works (from Great Artists BNW)*side effect=Tourism
6. Artist Specialists (which give Great Works BNW)

Effect of Culture in BNW
Policies (as before)
and
Tourism resistance

To win the game maximize Tourism..which means
Maximize Great Works/Artifacts (which produce culture as well)
Build Hotels in cities with World Wonders/Natural Wonders/Terrain culture (and maximize that culture)

So to Win a Cutural Victory, you will be generating a Lot of Culture

Futurism/Personality Cult/Media Culture/Dictatorship of the Proletariat/Cultural Revolution tenets
Hotels
Theming bonus (possibly it might boost culture as well)
Great Musician Concert
Diplomats
Open Borders with other civs
Trade routes with other civs
Shared Religion/Ideology with other civs

And the benefit of Tourism itself (besides winning) =unhappiness of other civs.. enough and their cities join yours.

I hope its worth it to invest in them without enough Great Works to fill everything.

Given that the specialist buildings to produce Great Artists/Musicians/Writers are now National Wonders, a wide civilization won't be producing any more GWAMs than a tall civ, really.
