The western Empire of the Roman people ... perished with that little Augustus ... the Gothic Kings occupying Rome thereafter. Count Marcellinus'

Armies of the Dark Ages

I realized that there have been a lack of units for the Dark Ages and the Fall of the West so I made units for it. I know they are only skins and I am not the greatest at skining, but please offer comments. Screenshots are in download and on the bottom of the page, left to right. Currently I only have the Goths done, but I will move onto Theodosian, Justinian, and Heraclian Dynasty Byzantines along with some Sassanid Persian units and mabey a Hun, Frank, or Saxon.

The Goths
Ostrogoth Mounted Comitatus
Only the Ostrogoths of Italy were known to field Cataphracts. Although never numerous, Ostrogothic Cataphracts were some of the most powerful troops in an Ostrogothic Army but only very wealthy or influential nobles were able to afford many of them as a retainer.

Gothic Lancer
Gothic Lancers made up the bulk of the Gothic Cavalry arm. Gothic cavalry were known for the ferocity of their charge and could charge through most enemies.

Gothic Dismounted Comitatus
Comitatus were the bodyguard of Gothic Nobles. They prefered to serve as cavalry in battle but were comfortable dismpunted.

Gothic Freeman Spearmen
Freeman made up the bulk of the Gothic armies. Although of little use in offensive maneuvers, when in formation they could be effective at repelling cavalry.

Thedosian, Justinian, and Heraclian Dynasty Byzantines

Byzantine Foederati
Foederati were barbarians that were enlisted in the Byzantine Army that gave an Oath of Allegiance to the General.

Legio Lanciarii
Legio Lanciarii were elite skirmishers that may have been part of the extended Praetorian Guard after Diocletian disbanded the Praetorian Guard as a political force and the units became part of the Scholae Palatinae (Guards of the Emperors Presence). By the reign of Justinian the were ceremonian only. Thanks to The_Coyote for help with the face, legs, and shinyer armour. His version is included in the download under Javelin_fx. For those who dislike the shiny armour, I will be uploading a version with the modified face and legs.

Nika Rebels
This is a late roman revolting peasent based on a picture I saw of the Nika Rebellions. The Nika Rebellions came out of the Emperor Justinians excessive taxing to fund his wars. Most of Constantinople revolted against him. Justinian was planning to flee the city but his wife Theodora convinced him not to and have his troops put down the rebellion. His troops forced the rebels into the Hippodrome where is was estimated they killed 30,000.
I did this unit primarily to get experiance doing cloth and any tips for doing cloth. I'll try to get around to adding a burning torch to the unit instead of a sword. Sorry, no screenshots, my DVD-ROM drive is broke.

Comitatenses
This is a Late Roman Comitatenses, or Field Legion. Constantine the Great had split the Roman Army into two parts. The Limitani, or Garrison troops, and the Comitatenses, or Field Army. The Comitatenses may not have been the equal to Cesear's Legions, but they were still the best troops in the Mediterainian World and were responsible for the survivale of the Eastern Roman Empire and kept the Western Roman Empire alive for longer.

Late Roman Cavalry
This is a late Roman Cavalry. Late Roman Cavalry were better than Republic or Early Imperial times due to the evolution of the Roman army and the increased number of barbarians serving in the army. I based the unit off the Roman cavalry on the cover of the Warhammer Supplement book Fall of the West, which you can find on the download link. (Screenshot7) Included in the download are some alternate shield designs. I might make some more designs based off of the Notita Dignitatum.

Germanic Tribes
The Germanic Tribes include the Franks, Saxons, Germanics, Lombards, and so on.

I suppose my attempt at making a helmet with the 'gogles' effect like on many germanic and Gothic helmets didnt work out? How are they besides that?

Thanks, any suggestions?

Good textures.
But they seem to be missing the metallic effect. Or is it just the screenshot ?

I dont have a clue how to get gloss maps so my armour isnt the most realistic. Do you know how to do gloss maps? Also, any tips? I cant figure out how to get my skins to be more realistic, and I cant find any advanced skinning tutorials. They jump straight from 'how to open up gimp and nifskope' to 'how to rig animations and make new models'.

I don't really know how to add gloss afterwards :(
In theory you need to transfer the NiTextureEffect from another Nif on to your mesh. Should be possible with some Nif Surgery. But i can't tell you exactly how.

As for tutorials - try looking the net for general texturing tutorials - "how to paint textures" is not something specific to Civ. You will have better odds on a Photoshop or Gimp related website.

Here for example is lots of stuff:

@Refar: Thanks, I'll look at it.
@Jeelen: Thanks, any units you would like to see?

Mmm, there's plenty, but they kinda fall out of the Dark Age range... which reminds me, I need to re-post a request.

Considering how much you helped me with my scenarios, a small unit request would be fair. As long as there is a model I can use, I could probably skin it for you.

I'm happy, I found all of the texture and lighting options in GIMP. I did a test on my foederati, even just a quick trial made the unit look much better. I'll try and get a trial unit out by monday.

Good for you!

Well, medieval units aren't really my cup-a-tea; I just keep an eye out for new units being uploaded. (Re-posted my request - it's for MOO2Civ; I really appreciate the offer, but I got the impression you're pretty busy right now, with unit making, RFRE and what not. Just keep doing what you're doing!)

I didnt make the models, they are all either firaxis or civ community. I have no 3-D skill and I dont have time to learn how to make models. Thanks for the compliments though.

I added a new unit, Legio Lanciarii. I used a new technique for the skin so please comment. If you know how to delete an abject, you you delete the horn on the Legios chest?

I added a revolting peasent based of a picture I found of the Nika Rebellion. I dont have a screenshot considering my DVD-ROM drive is broke, but if you download it, please comment on the cloth. I know it isnt the greatest but I have been unable to figure out how to do cloth.

Thanks. Any suggestions on the skins? My next unit will either be a Logothete (if I can figure out how to do a good job on cloth) or some Byzantine Bucelarii or regular heavy cavalry.
