Hmm, I have a leader in a city. I have military tradition. I can't get an army. Does the army show up in the production box? Like as a unit? Are there more prerequisites for army production?

Help. I'm dumb.

What I did was get the military units that I want to added to the army unto the city where my leader was and click the load button and they will be added to the army, up to 3 units I believe.

Regards,
Kyppo

The manual wasn't horribly clear on this... When you bring the Leader to a city of yours, he gets two new options, Rush build and Make Army or some such. Choose the one you want to do (army in most cases, why waste a precious leader on a non-wonder when a population point will do it too?) and then the 'army' leader is loadable, like a transport, but unlike. You *can* unload units as well, so you're not stuck with elite warriors in your army for eternity. :)

Oh, and loading/unloading can be done outside of a city, only *forming* the army (converting the leader to an army) is done in a city...

Armies promise to get fun with my tanks and cavalry in them... :) If all units are the same speed they move at that rate. As in 3 tanks in my army allows me to break off if I'll die (great for attacking for a siege) unless my opponent is as mobile as I am, but one warrior and two tanks slows all three to a move of 1.

See?

Good luck, and I'm still puzzling this out myself. :)

Please, HOW can you unload an army??? I just cant... there is no such option... In matter of fact I AM stuck with my elite jaguar warriors!!! HELP!

No, no!

I did a great job with my elite jaguar warriors, but... I want to upgrade them to something funkier! And I cant! I cant take them out of the army, neither can I upgrade the whole thing...

I am desperate...

I looked into this last night and tried unloading my riflemen. No such luck.

I didn't realize that Movement points were shared - thanks for the tip. I might rethink my "mix and match strategy - although i really like the added defense that infantry has to offer. Besides, if you get your army down to one hitpoint, you have bigger problems to worry about. But it WOULD make them move quicker, which is very frustrating. Now that I am cranking out tanks, I may just have to try some Tank Battalions.

Can you include Artillery in an army? I haven't tried this yet. That could be very interesting. For now, I just move them along with the group. I made the mistake of keeping them with the army, but when the army would enter the city, a knight or whatever would sneak around and capture them. now i just make sure an infantry goes with them. A stack of infantry, actually, so I can just plop them in conquered cities and begin immediate work on temples.

Darn. I was going to try to work on law school apps tonight, or at least get some sleep. looks like other things will be in store. It's high time the French wiped out the Babylonians and Germans anyway. Especially since Germans have Rubber and Oil, and I don't want to run out of either.

You cannot unload units from an army - once it's built, you're stuck with it. Build another army if you want a different mix.

I've found that my best armies are made up of one type of unit, usually the best offensive unit available. Armies are not meant for defense in my opinion, and keeping the composition consistent means that you're not losing any movement to a slower unit type.

You cannot include artillery in an army. They are for support. I'm not sure why you would want arty in an army anyway, but it's not allowed.

As for your last comment, "They've ruined your life......... Again!"

It sucks that you are stuck with your units (I really have a jaguar warrior army, that eliminated the Sioux... :))

Yes, I agree that the army should be made up of the same troops type. Actually I think it better to have a fast unit, since they can retreat if loosing an attack... but still do considerable damage.

However we should be able to upgrade at least if not replace the units in the army.

Well, you can always disband it... I think for 100 shields - not bad, but still...

By the way, do troops get more experienced IN the army?

But because of the drawbacks army might not worth the hassle except under really bad circumstances when there is no other solution... (but hey - armies are cool :)))

Do you mean, that they were upgraded from veteran to elite OR you could somehow upgrade e.g. from rifleman to infantry?
If the latter, how?

I had a veteran troop upgrade to an Elite one in an army, so they do upgrade. Cool stuff.

I'm sure he means upgrading from Veteran to Elite. I've had that happen, it ups your hit points by one. But you can't upgrade from Spearmen to Infantry or anything like that.

Sometimes the faster units retreat, sometimes they fight to the death. I killed an army of Indian War Elephants with an army of Persian Immortals and the elephants which have a movement of 2 I believe fought valiently but hopelessly to their deaths. (This is after many turns of bombardment of them by cannons and catapults as they were embedded on a hill). For reasons unknown, I think the AI had the unit on "fortify" and never moved them, even after I went about 6 turns bombarding them with cannons which I used to soften it up before finishing them off with my army. Weird, eh?
