army wont attack!!

hello,
i just placed a thread at the civ 4 forum as follows one of my towns got invaded and i sent an army to free it but my army just walks into the town while the enemy is there and nothing happens!!!i then attack other armies and again nothing happens with others as well !!! what is the solution to this anomaly??

I started a new game today and same problem!! is there a solution or i cant play the game?

Are you sure you're at war with that civ and that they didn't get that city through Culture?

I think you are missing something here.
A savegame or at least screenshots would definitely be helpful on such a bug report.
