If one has a city on a one-square island, (or on a slightly bigger island, on which all squares are occupied by a unit of some type), is it possible to capture the city without the use of marines? Does this imply that the city is invulnerable until the advent of marines?

I never tried this. . . if the city is undefended, can you land regular infantry (not marines) directly on it? I think not, which is stupid if so as it has no defenders.

The nly way I could think of getting it without marines is just ignoring them until you have them, the spy giving proganda is too expensive and too prone to failure, nuking is just wasting your time, it's a city with only on square underneath!!! Honestly, it's not worth your time, if it's that Civ's only city left, you might as well consider them annihalitated

Zouave: No, you can't land directly on an unoccupied city and take it. Nor can you capture non-military units in this way. I was playing a game on a real world map recently, as the Romans. I was attacking the Greeks who held Crete, which was a two-square island; they had a city on one of the squares, and a worker working the other square. So I had to wait for the stupid worker to finish what he was doing and move inside the city before I could land on the island. Of course, if I were the one holding Crete, I would have held the worker on that square forever, making it unassailable.

I use this fact to my advantage all the time. I have many undefended coastal cities for much of the game, secure in the knowledge that enemies who land next to the city will get taken out by my knights/cavalry on the next turn. It works especially well with the AI, because the AI knows that the city is undefended, and so sees it as a target; it will be perfectly happy to send a ship filled with a warrior and spearman half way round the map just to get to the city. Of course, you have to place a garrison in the city with the advent of marines.

It just seems like a bit of a game flaw to me that these cities just cannot be attacked before modern times.

The best way to get these cities (and the only way to get them before marines come along) is to get them in a peace treaty from the other civ. This can save an enormous amount of time when playing on the earth map that has a lot of these kind of islands.

Sulla: I agree, that's the best way to get them; however it can still be annoying, and occasionally a weak enemy's capital gets relocated there. I have several examples of this:

- I was the Japanese, at war with the Chinese. They had a city a little south west of Japan, on a size 1 island, and it had some culture, so it's influence was substantial. I wanted peace with the Chinese, after mostly wiping them out, but they wouldn't give me the city in exchange for it. Eventually, after I had almost wiped them out completely, they agreed to give me the city in exchange for peace.
- In the same game, I was wiping out the Indians, and they relocated their capital onto Sri Lanka, which is only size 1. I had to wait until I got marines to destroy them. This can be very, very annoying when combined with culture flipping craziness.
- In the scenario I posted above with the Greeks and Crete, I had just captured Athens, and was trying to get it to flip back. Knossos, the city on Crete, had lots of culture, and so was putting cultural pressure on Athens. I wanted to take it asap to minimize the chances of a city flip, but couldn't.
