The theory is simple.
Click on a far advanced tech when the thing comes up asking what tech you want to research "let me see the big picture"
during one such game - after a few basic techs to build stuff- i clicked "gunpowder" 1 hundred million turns, and put everything on automate which allows one to walk away without any great consequence unless you happened to be attacked or something during that time in which case you should que up a few units before you go and put them on autopromote. (multiplayer)
the result of this was discovering theocracy first somehow and a relaxed game wherin the player stays competitive during a usually routine like build era.
