Attila the Hun in BtS?

Wheren't the Huns a Turkic group?

One of the theory says yes Huns are a branch of Turks same culture and same life style as Turks

Joseph de Guignes in the 18th century identified the Huns with the Xiongnu or (H)siung-nu, there has been a school of thought that the Huns were of Turkic origin. This theory is also supported by O. Maenchen-Helfen, on the basis of his linguistic studies. English scholar Peter Heather, also called the Huns "the first group of Turkic, as opposed to Iranian, nomads to have intruded into Europe". Kemal Cemal, a Turkish researcher, points to linguistic evidence; compares Turkic and Hunnic words, names and shows the similarities between them. He also compares systems of governance of the Huns to that of other Turkic tribes, and demonstrates how similar they are. Others who support this view include Hungarian historian Gyula Nemeth in his 1991 book Hungary.

Atilla deserve to be added to civ4 he was an important leader and commander in history.

Attila fits as a Great General...the Huns don't fit as a Civ. If they're Turkic, we already have the Turks(Ottoman Empire, but we know they're Turks). If they're Xiong Nu...well, the Xiong Nu have a much longer history and a cultural heritage that survives even today. Not suggesting they should add the Xiong Nu(though it would've been cool for the Chinese Uni scenario to have some of the non-Chinese people involved!)

The main reason the Huns won't get in was that the Mongols conquered more and were very similar to the Huns.

Well this has been quite interesting...I don't really care if they "fit" I want 'em in! Perhaps when the list is announced and they aren't there I'll find a decent mod. Is there one?

The main reason the Huns won't get in was that the Mongols conquered more and were very similar to the Huns.

Main difference being, that Genghis Khan created an empire together with code of laws to stay for several generations.

After Attila passed off for too much a wine, the Huns just scattered.

The Huns don't deserve to be a civilization in that they were more responsible than any other barbarian tribe for destroying the greatest civilization that ever existed. Basically, they show up in Eastern Europe around the 370's, pushing the Goths and other tribes westward. Goths enter Roman territory, beat Valens at Adrianople, pillage, and finally are admitted as federates.

Attila rampages across Western Europe later in the 5th century, until he's stopped at Chalons by Aetius in 451. He looks at Rome briefly around 453, I believe it was, but supposedly is stopped by Pope Leo. After that, he dies basically of overindulgence, and the Huns just kind of drop off the face of the earth.

Having said that, they'd be great for a scenario.

Calling the Romans the greatest civilization ever to exist is questionable. Seriously, it was all empty land in the Western Empire with the occassional aqueduct or settlement to remind you the Romans owned it. Take a look at the Greeks, and later when they are incorporated into the East Roman Empire: great cosmopolitan cities, not hydrophobic, scientific advancements, cradle of democracy, the center of the Mediterranean intellectual world...there's a civilization.

EDIT: On the Huns, I don't think they will make the cut. It's something along the lines of what was said above: the Huns were famous only during Atilla's reign, basically, and then disappeared. Civilization "civs" are those that left a lasting mark on the world, not ones that flared, however brightly, and then fell into complete obscurity.

HI to all the civers. I did not know where to say this at oh well... I'm kind of new to the civ series. My first civ game was civ4 and now i play warlords and i cant wait for beyond the sword. Anyways this game makes the total war series regarding diplomacy look very bad. My favorite civ is Rome b/c i love roman history and think it was the greatest in all of history. I play many games online and 1 player also. I just wanted to say hi to all the civers b/c i have been reading this site for a long time for hints.

Hi Titus! Welcome to CFC. I guarantee you'll be hopelessly addicted by the end of the month so familiarise yourself with CivAnon.

And actually there's a place to introduce yourself: here.

No. The Huns were a branch of the Xiongnu which terrorised the Han Empire for a while till they were defeated. Then other tribes arrived to fill their place. The Mongols inhabited the same area but they came a millenium later.

Yes, of course. The Xiongnu and Han. How foolish of me.

Personaly, I would never be much afraid of a group that branched off of the fiersome gnu. Unless they came from Gary Gnu. He scares me still.

So it may be an innocent mistake, but it may be an innadvertant clue!

This links to the civanon webpage, a sort of joke page that firaxis created to help fans curb their civ "addictions." They mention Attila as a Civ dictator along side Ghengis Khan.

Does this mean that the Huns are one of the Civs in Beyond the Sword?
:goodjob:

They also mention Saxons, does that prove anything?

Here's an idea for a scenario Britain- you start out as the Celts and defend against successive invasion attempts by the Romans , Saxons, Vikings, French, Spanish, French & Americans, and finally, Germans.

Civ Stockholm Syndrome/Displaced Sexuality. A small subculture of Civ addicts has been known to experience a displaced affection toward the very root of its addiction, particularly for alpha-male Civ dictators such as Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. There have even been rumors of a fringe element of Civ “Stockholmers” who routinely meet in “swinger”-type environments during which they play pseudo-erotic games such as, “Slip Me The Mau Tse Tung,” among many others.

Surrogate Reality. In many cases, particularly for those gamers who take in excess of 80-90 turns at a single sitting, a false reality will set in. Addicts find it impossible to separate their game life from “real” life, often confusing mundane, everyday occurrences (such as the honking of a car horn) as overt acts of political aggression. A hardcore gamer in Allentown, PA, for example, is now doing 6-months to 2-years for misdemeanor assault for bludgeoning the pizza delivery guy from Carmine’s with his mouse, mistaking him for the vanguard assault scout of an invading Saxon army.

Well there's where it comes from...unless you, like quite a lot of people on this board tend to do, use info only to make a stupid point, you'll see that the way they are used are quite different.

Saxons are an invading army...barbarians, something that can happen in game.

Attila is mentioned with Ghengis...leaders, one of which is in game, the other is not.

~sigh...I hate having to spell stuff out for people, but I am tired~

I'm sorry - my reaction reads like a rude remark, and I didn't intend that.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I agree that it could have been an error or an inadvertant clue. I wonder if there's anything else to corroborate it, but I guess there's no way of knowing at this time one way or the other.
