Why? In PTW, you'll be able to upgrade them to Medieval Infantry and then to Guerillas. If you really wanted to get rid of them, why not just disband them for the shields. Even if the AI would accept them in trade, what kind of deal do you think they'd give you for obsolete units?
You give your obsolete units or even modern units to those Civs that are at war with another country you may not particularly not want to attack directly. Just think of it as the U.S. giving weapons to Afghanistan during the Afghan war with U.S.S.R. America didn't dare get involved fighting the Russians directly but by sending those shoulder fired surface to air missles alot of Russian helicopters and jets were shot down by the Afghans. Something that definately helped to determine the outcome of that war.
Unit trading would be very nice for tactics. All the trade network stuff should apply to it, though. It's absurd that I can get a worker from another continent to my capital via a trade in 1 turn, but I can't manage to trade grapes until the other guy gets around to building a harbor. Why doesn't the worker bring the grapes with him? Customs?
Yah I really want unit trading. That could allow one to get involved it alot of foreign wars, because simply giving money and techs and resources (which I sometimes do for fun) to the losing side is not enough---arms dealing is needed. What I do occaisonally when I'm looking for a "variant" game is try to pick one civ and make them become dominant. Usually I'll take control of my continent, then meddle around and pick sides on the other continent to try to develop one nation into a superpower. It can actually be challanging, in fact TOO challanging, but arms dealing will really make this "variant" interesting, because it would make it much easier to do this.
Good idea! It would work if you have a small country and 1) Want to attack a larger country, but dare not attack it your self 2) have lots of money but no production.
Another idea to follow this up is if you can trade city improvements. (Think of the French and the Statue of Liberty)
I like this idea too. It's better than in civ2 to be able to donate or sell your units would be just too cool, especially when civs have uniques sets of units.
I think selling city improvements might be going too far though cause like what do they do - pack a building in a truck and send it over? This is done occasionally in reality like for factories but hmmm....
