When do you actually use the Autocracy Government ?
Most of the times a warmonger picks Oligarchy and a peaceful Civ takes Classical Republic , does anyone actually take autocracy ? 2 military cards is a bit excessive at that time even for a warmonger and and the boost to wonder production does not help a warmonger .

AFAIK Oligarchy combat bonus only applies to melee combat units excluding cavalry, which leads some cavalry players to use autocracy, although they don't care about the wonder bonus. I personally even use republic & the wildcard slot for military bonuses.

2 military policies mean Conscription and Agoge/Maneuver for a carpet of death or war on two fronts. Need a navy then Maritime Industries. All of this helps until your traders are up and running.

I feel like they should just swap Autocracies and Oligarchies bonus. That would make Autocracy the military government, Oligarchy the tall government, and Classical Republic as the wide government.

Playing Harald I usually switch between Oligarchy and Autocracy to get the wonder bonus to finish The Great Lighthouse and The Colossus faster.

There are a lot of good military cards around that time I often use the 100% ones for overflow now. I tend to hold off on heavy builder wave until feudalism and just get settlers out there. I can cope in the period with one commerce card and as said there is the wildard slot

Like policies, you can swap governments. Start at Autocracy to mass-produce units for reduced maintenance, then use Oligarchy when fighting, then maybe switch to Classical Republic while preparing for Feudalism.

I played one game with Russia with only sticking to Autocracy untill I had build all the wonders that I wanted. Have the correct civ card also for the era. It did work towards the goal on getting everything I wanted and it wasn't that bad when you could even get all of the extra policy wonders. It's not optimal, but can work well.
